Steering Rack Bushing R&R

Purchased new bushings for my steering rack so I could replace the OEM bushings from my 92 NSX. Did one side at a time so I didn't have to have my steering realigned. However, on the driver's side I was unable to get to the top set of bushings w/o dropping the whole steering rack off the car to do the removal.

Has any one had any success in removing ALL bushings to do this R&R without dropping the entire steering rack from the car?

If anyone has any hot tips, or pointers.... I'm all ears!!!

P.S. The current bushings didn't look in too bad of shape to begin with. So if dropping the rack is the only way to get to the top bushings, I'm cool with leaving the car "as is".

I'm guessing not alot of people have done this upgrade/repair. Or have only done it by taking the entire steering rack off the car.

I replaced all of the bushings with the polyurethane replacements. I did not have to remove the rack. It was actually pretty easy. I don't have any sage advice, but it was trouble free. Did you use a lift? I have access to one!

Why are you replacing these bushings? What do you think they will do?

My 1991 has 119K miles (many hard track miles) and I was also considering doing this because an earlier thread here recommended it and SOS has a bushing set to do it. Your question makes me think it's a rare failure on these cars and I shouldn't bother. Do you have experience with these bushings?

I haven't seen a bad set so far. I suppose they can go, I just haven't seen it.
I have seen the rack inner bushing wear out and am working on a replacemnt for that since Acura doesn't have one.

Guess I'll just get under there and see if there's any looseness in the mounts. I wonder if the R&P (therefore the internal bushings) is the same on the Legends or Vigors or if Honda actually fabricated a whole new R&P for the NSX?
Thanks and Happy Motoring!

Kinda off-topic, but look at this post for the internal steering rack bushings:

(BTW - That's a really good thread that apparently just died to obscurity if you have the time to read through it).

I'm sure there's a lot of owners out there that would be interested in some new internal bushing kits. Good luck pbassjo!

I heard that these bushings are black and not red from SOS, does that mean they are still urethane or are the black ones rubber?... Thanks...

The bushings we sell are urethane. We have produced them in red and black. No difference other than color. We have seen some bushings that are very deteriorated (see the example on our website from a 90k mile NSX) and some, on cars with the same miles, that are still soft and compliant. Being a natural material, the rubber will oxidize and deteriorate with time.

You should not need to drop the rack on a M/T non EPS car. The EPS cars are more difficult to get to, because the motor makes the diameter of the rack larger, so add an extra 1-2 hours for installation in EPS cars.

Thanks Chris, the pictures tell the story.

I wonder if pulling the boots back and forcing grease or graphite into the internal bushings would help lessen their wear ?

Guess the PO replaced my bushings because they're urethane and A-OK.

Pbassjo, looks like a few here could use your help with the internal bushings. Hope you get lucky (with the bushings).

When I did my bushings this is the way I did it as well one side at a time. Then I ran into not being able to get the last one drivers side upper if memory serves right. So I said good enough, next winter I tried again after finding bushing, this time I loosened both sides this allowed the rack to lower enough to get the last bushing in. My car is a 2000 with electric rack, I also had to disconnect wires, I left the rods connected just took of all the support brackets, I also marked where they were with felt pelt and used marks as reference for re-assembly.

I'm having the screeching issue when turning the steering wheel and now there is some slack when turning the wheel while stopped - will replacing these bushings help resolve this? Or is this an internal rack issue? Thanks
