Steering Issue?

In the search of previous posts, I have not read one that specifically addresses my potential steering issues. No EPS indicator light has come on. I think my issue may be more mechanical and was wondering if anyone could advise.

When the car is running and not in motion, the feeling I got from the steering wheel was a slight empty gap when turning and disappears. I would not describe the turning effort as heavy like the EPS is not working. This gap is evident when turning to the right or the left. I also stood outside the vehicle and rocked the wheel back and forth and can hear knocking sounds present. The car is in alignment and drives completely straight.

Any ideas? Cost to fix? Your thoughts are appreciated.

What year?

How many miles?

I would check your inner tie rods and tie rod ends first. Best way is to lock the steering wheel(key out) raise the car, the grab the tires at 3 and 9 o'clock and make sure there is no play, I mean "0" play.

Thanks Larry for your help. It is a 1996 with close to 57K miles. I will check that out. I also need to make sure whatever it is, it will not have an impact on safety.
