Steering column cover removal

I just set out to clean the contacts on my turn signal cancelling unit but am unable to remove the plastic cover which shelters it. I removed the four screws which seem to hold the upper column cover ( which covers the unit), but it won't budge and I didn't want to start prying at anything. I don't see any other screws for that piece. Are there more hidden somewhere? Do I need to remove more covers from the steering cover to get at them? Thanks.

The manual states that there are 8 screws for the upper and lower steering column covers. It appears that the upper cover, which conceals the directional electrics , should come off via the 4 screws visible from underneath. As mentioned, I removed those 4 screws and the cover is just as tightly attatched with the screws off . Do I need to pry at this point? Any help here?

You seem to be doing the right thing as outlined in the online service manual on page 23-178. If you're going to pry, do it gently and use a towel to protect the guage cluster in case the top part suddenly decides to eject itself. Are you sure you removed all the screws and did the lower cover come off easily?

Did you remove the tilt cover as described in step 3?

Don't forget that this is a tilt steering wheel. Use that adjustment to make it easier to get that top cover off. If the wheel is not lowered all the way I don't think that you can get it off. Be sure that both top and bottom parts are loose, all screws removed. This also will give you some room to work the top part off.

If I remember two of the screw in the upper cover do not go thru the lower cover. If you lay under column and shine a light up there, you will see the two screws, which are in a couple inches on each side, kind of in the center of the upper cover, where it seems to be stuck at. Nothing is better than having your signals cancel themselves!
