I have a problem with the starting of the car. Sometimes, I turn the key and it just gives me a click like a relay noise but the starter does not turn. After several tries, the starter turns and the car starts. Or the starter turns several times and stops. Battery and contacts are new and clean. On top of that, on rare occasions the car does not start again if I stall it even though the starter turns fine. I cannot replicate the problem at the shop as this does not always happen. Any ideas?

mkuru,

Your description really describes two issues:

1. Intermittent Starter Operation

Possibilities:
A. Bad Starter
B. Bad connection at Starter/Battery (although you say the connections at the battery are OK have you looked at the starter terminals?)
C. Bad ignition switch (less likely, but NSX have been known to have this problem after high mileage)

2. Car not starting

For this one I have a few questions

A. Is it just hard to start, as in you must turn the key off and try again?
B. How many miles on the car?
C. When was the car last serviced?
D. Fuel filter replacement, etc?
E. Any check engine light, ever?

Let me know.

Thanks,
LarryB

Larry's list is right on target.
I'd like to add:
How old is your battery?
Give it a load test.

Oops! Duh, you said it was a new battery.
Nevermind.

I have what sounds like the same problem. Mine goes to Hill Top this week to get it checked out.

It has eroded to the point where I can duplicate it most every time now, should be pretty easy for Don to track it down, I will let you know what comes of it, general consensus here when I first posted about it was the ignition switch.

My problem was indeed the ignition switch, total cost to repair: $150

Again symptoms were:

* Turn key = No response
* Turn key = Electrical comes on, engine does not fire
* Turn Key = Engine fires, but dies once key is released
* Turn Key = Nothing, holding in place can inspire item 2 or 3 above

With enough attempts it would eventually start, the best way to ensure it stayed running was the hammer the throttle just as it turned over, then release the key and punch it again

Thank God that is behind me, that got progressively worse in a big hurry...

I am having problems too!

Symptoms:

* Turn key, power comes on.. engine turns but wont start.
* I try it again and boom it starts.

The longest It has not started was three turns. I dont understand what is wrong. I has done this on and off for a month now. Sometimes it starts just fine. I would love to fix it, but I have no idea how.

PS. Just got a new battery and it still happens.

Sounds like you might be experiencing something similar. Let me tell you, for the $150 it cost to fix it, is was WELL worth it!

Nothing more embarassing than pulling in to get gas, having everyone checking out your car, then not being able to start it!

Jonathon,

Did you take it to an acura dealer to fix or just a local mechanic? I don't have an acura dealership near me.

I had a local mechanic do it, but he has a good reputation working with the NSX.

If this is your problem, it would not take a rocket scientist to fix it, seemed like a simple operation.

It's nice to see an honest mechanic in the NSX world. I've seen this repair be much more expensive at dealerships.
