Starting Over?

Just curious if anyone here has literally "started over" by picking up and moving to a different place without necessarily having a job to go to? Kind of going through one of those mid-life crisis deep thought kind of phases and realizing that where we are at is maybe not the best place to be for our happiness.

Happiness is a state of mind. Unhappiness can not be cured by changing your longitude latitude coordinates.

When I was 18 I bought a Honda wagon and traveled the entire United States. I still have the map of the US with cigarette tax stamps taped to all the states in the US. I visited every state, with extended stays in Texas and Arizona. There are some very beautiful places out there but none nicer than here with my family and life long friends. Would I prefer to live elsewhere? Absolutely! But without being able to move all my family and friends along with me I will stay here. I would prefer to be in a warm climate without snow or cold, but feel more comfortable around people I know, love and trust.

All that you say is perfectly true but I'm afraid that in our case our family has become quite spread out and friends are not really an issue. It's just a pipe dream, at least for the moment, but living in a crowded and expensive state where I don't like the climate is getting really old.
I'm always reminded when I get in this "mood" of the couple we met in St. Thomas when we were honeymooning there. They were from Michigan and had discussed moving to St. Thomas for years before taking the plunge. They had no regrets and advised us not to waste all the years that they did in thinking about it. Now St. Thomas may be a bit unrealistic but the idea of not wasting years agonizing over the decision is still valid.

I am guessing you live in the Northeast like I do. I too am dreading the coming winter. I rarely leave the house during the winter months because I hate being cold. This getting dark at 5ish sucks too.

Come to Arizona, we have cheap housing and next year's NSXPO! :D

Besides, I just saw "Day After Tomorrow" and am planning to invest in some retirement property in Mexico before it's too late! :p

Yeh, good guess mate. I hate the winter and everybody forgets how to drive as soon as the clocks change - thank heavens I no longer commute to work.
The SAD is already in full effect and we're not even into the cold weather yet!

I don't know what "Day After Tomorrow" is but Arizona is definitely somewhere that I would consider. So far the short list includes Arizona, South Carolina, and Ireland.

I sort of did that. I had to quit my job and move to Savannah because my wife got a job there. I really had no idea what I was going to do, so I took a job in online sales for the time being. It is no where near the level of respect and responsibilty I used to have, but the money is close. I absolutely hate it. I am currently re-evaluating what I want to do and once again start over. It is not easy, but anything has to be better than what I am doing now.

I guess in your case you really need to evaluate all that you currently have where you are. If you think you would be happier and could live a better quality of life, go for it. Life is too short to be unhappy.

Thanks for the thoughts. The evaluation will be a bit different later this week - we find out on Thursday if my wife is losing her job... :o :( :( :( :o

One great place to start all over would be Las Vegas. If I didn't have such a good situation, I'd have moved there to open a restaurant or work in the casino industry. Cheap housing, no state income tax, and friends will always visit.

ive thought of moving away several times and am in the middle of the thought again now. My job is going away and im having a heck of a time finding another one. I dont like the climate here either. colorado winters are just too cold anymore to enjoy them and the summers are all rain. I guess im more of a warmer climate person. I dont mind the rain but when it rains so much over a limited nice weather summer, its kind of a drag

My sister just did that 2 months ago. She's a film editor and had been working in NYC since she graduated college 4 years ago, but wasn't very happy at her job. All her friends and family is also in NY, but she decided to pick up and go out to Los Angeles where there is much more opportunity in her field. So she went out there, found a job, an apartment, and loves it there although she doesn't have many friends yet. But she does live 2 blocks from the beach in Santa Monica. I guess it depends on your personality and if you are the social type that can make new friends easily wherever you pick up and go to. If not, you may find it difficult and a bit lonely. But if you are not happy where you are, maybe that trade-off will still be worth it.

And don't forget the number one reason!!! Factor X!! :)

We looked at moving to vegas as we loved it there. I had a hard time finding ANY good paying jobs out there. Ever since the Las Vegas show came on I have been wanting to work for Casino Security :)

If im still in the same scenario Im in now at the age of 30, Los Angeles here I come. The only reason I stay in NJ is my job and my parents. Sometimes I feel like that movie, Groundhog Day. Ive got a great life-just very repetitive. My thought is why not repeat the same day over and over again in sunny beautiful weather, oh and women in bikini's are hotter than those in extreme snow apparell....

There is always school - graduate degree, 2nd degree, etc...

That's unfortunately only an option if one spouse can carry the weight while the other pursues their dreams. Once you get to a certain point in life with mortgage, car payments, kids in private school, etc, that's no longer possible.

Nine years ago I woke up one morning and decided that NYC was not the place that I wanted to work and live in anymore. Three days later I packed up my crap, bought a one way ticket, and moved to Florida and I haven't regretted it once. I had no job lined up and I only had one distant cousin who lived in Florida. It was an impulse decision that ended up being the best one of my life.

That's awesome! Good for you for having the courage to do something like that!

My wife and I moved to Raleigh a few months ago. We sold the house in Santa Barbara, did lots of internet searches regarding, "Where is the best place to live for...." Raleigh was always in the top 10 for all of the searching we did. We thought, what the heck and moved here. We might even stay. If not, we'll find some other place and go there.

Life is not a practice round. I've lived and worked in Asia, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and the former Eastern Bloc. The best thing (except for the wife) that ever happened to me.

The best thing about the move was that I got to drive the NSX from California to North Carolina!

Concord, NC has come up in these discussions as we have family there. Bit hot and sticky for my liking...

Sometimes the only way to find out where you want to be is to be where you DONT want to be.....

If you try many different places, you may find what you are looking for, or you may find what you had was what you wanted.:P
