Starter Solenoid

I have a 91 with approximately 120K miles on it. About 2-3 years ago, I rebuilt the starter (new contacts, etc -- FWIW, it ran about $20).

Last time I *started* my car, I heard a high-pitched whine right as the car started up. When I *tried* starting it the last few times, I hear the starter motor spinning -- but it is not engaging the flywheel (aka the "whining sound" from the last time). From what I understand, the starter solenoid is bad.

I called Niello earlier today. The starter lists for $712, with the NSXCA (thank you, NSXCA!) discount it runs $497. Unfortunately, you can't buy "just the solenoid."

Does this sound like a solenoid problem? Are there any creative solutions out there to solve this problem without going the new starter route?

Thanks for any and all replies,

-Matt

The solenoid should be rebuildable too. In the "working mans" part of town there should be somebody who rebuilds starters, alternators and motors. Take it to them...specify OEM parts, and you should do fine.

The Legend starter might work too, do some research first.

I do NOT recommend going to your normal autoparts chain for anything (like a Legend starter), they use just awful cheap parts.
