Just took my car in for the tech inspection for NSXPO and asked for a diagnosis of a metallic scraping noise that is evident only when starting the car and then for just a fraction of a second. It emanates from below and to the rear of the driver. The battery is brand new now and the sound was evident before and after the battery was changed out.

The service sheet indicates that it is the beginning of a problem with the starter motor and the repair would be $994 plus tax.

Any ideas about whether this makes sense and how long I could expect to go without needing the work done? It is a '96 with 55,500 miles. The car never has a problem cranking or starting but merely has this brief but annoying sound upon the initial crank.

Thanks for any advice.

I had a problem with my starter on a '92. The dealer had me convinced to pay close to a $1000 for a new starter installed ... until a redneck mechanic friend of mine said "It's not made of gold - get it rebuilt". My first thought was to tell him to get back to his pickup truck and let me go and buy a new starter. However, I did listen to him. I had it rebuilt for $79 with a 6 month warranty. 2 years later and it's still working fine!

Look around for a reputable shop that specializes in rebuilding starters. It's alot cheaper than buying a new one. And buy the way ... NSX starters are not made of gold!
