Starter from a '99 - Will it work on a '91?

Im looking for a Starter as well for cheap.. I don't know much about cars but my NSX's starter failed. I need a '99 1 so if it doesnt work out for you how much are you willing to offer me that starter?

See this thread I posted:

You can get your starter rebuilt to new condition in nearly all cases. I would go that rout before replacing,.... Mine turned out PERFECT and cost me < $100 and about a hour of wrenching. It is super easy. PM or e-mail me if you have questions.

I agree with Jeff, that is the way to go. Even if you take it to a shop and ask them to have it rebuilt, it will still be significantly less then a new starter.

To answer the original question, 1991-94 have a different starter from the 1995-2005's. I honestly do not know the difference. I have had both years in my hand many times and did not recall a significant difference. Never swapped an early for a late model or the other way around. By part number they are different though.

There should be no need to buy a new one for your car. Worst case is that you buy a used one and have it rebuilt,... then you essentially have a new starter.

My experience from rebuilding parts is an alternator not a starter. I had the alternator rebuilt to save money, or so I thought. A couple of months later when I was driving out of town, the rebuilt alternator went out! I was bummed big time

This was in an Integra though. So my question is, are rebuilt starters more reliable than rebuilt alternators? Are more parts replaced in one than the other. In the above case, I would have saved money, time and hassle if I would have went ahead on and bought new from the get go.

I think the true question would be, is the rebuilder reliable and do good work. When your alternator went out, did they repair it, was it in/out of warranty? Mistakes happen, so did they atand behind it?

I have used a shop I know for 30 years. I have not had an alternator or starter come back, NSX or otherwise.

Good question. Alternators by definition get more use and in the same vane, will probably die more quickly if it is not done correctly (just a guess). In my case the shop that did my rebuild replaced pretty much everything that gets wear in the starter (bearings, plunger, brushes, & contacts. This means the only thing that did not get replaced was the housing, the motor assembly (the thing with all the twisted wire), and the brush holder (which just holds the brushes and little else. They even replaced the nuts holding the positive cable that comes off of the distribution block.

I have had good luck with rebuilt starters and trust them just like a new one. If the alternator went out after a rebuild I would take it back to the shop and have them do it over again or at least explain what crapped out. I would be pissed too. With the starter it is SO easy to get it in and out, I would opt for a rebuild. There are just not that many parts in a starter, and if you take it to a reputable shop, I think you should be fine.

If you buy a starter from a Acura or Honda dealer it is not brand new virgin.
It will say Honda on the box but it most likely is a rebuilt

No I didn't bother taking it back. I think the dealer out of town kept it for the core charge. I didn't want to pay to keep the alternator. It very well may have been a bum job. Maybe next time I'll just do my homework a little better as far as what is a reputable shop.
