I left a company of 35,000 employees to join a company of 100 employees.

I get to manage 20 employees, and manage/run part of the business.

I work in IT, so I got shipped a laptop yesterday.

Took a look at the laptop, it looked like it was picked out of a junk bin. Runs W2K, Office 2K, no DVD rom, etc etc. Already sent email to boss to let him know this is unacceptable. They are paying me major bucks, and yet gave me a POS computer to do my job with.

Never understand the mentality of some businesses who pay major bucks for good talent, and then saddle them with crappy computers to do their jobs. Penny wise and major pound foolish.

Small companies are going to be fun.

Don't feel bad. I work for a Newspaper and my desktop is a P2-450 and my laptop is also a P2-450! That sad thing is, I have one of the faster machines in the advertsing department!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAmen to that!

I take my iPAQ Pocket PC with me - it has better performance than some of the computers i deal with everyday. :D

I do not understand why more companies don't LEASE their workstations. After three years, they are replaced. Simple as that. One client i do work for has been doing this for 5years... instead of paying me to do hardware-maintenance, I'm free to work on other developments. And if ever a workstation breaks down, I put in a service call and it's repaired under warrenty. It's the ONLY way to fly.

Be thankfull you have a decent job. I went from making close to 6 figures 3 years ago to going back to school to get my college degree in hopes of getting an even better job. Been 2 months since I graduated and still no real job :frown: . Plus I work part time for what personally has been the WORST company I have ever been involved with, UPS. Its a job where I have DOUBLE the production of a few of the people I work with yet I make less because they have tenure, bleh  , not to mention managment does nothing about slow or lazy employees because they are "union", but they also blow smoke up your rear end, and cant get you a straight answer when you ask them one thing then go to HR and get a completely different answer. This is not to bag on UPS, im sure there are people out there who enjoy the Brown, this is just my personal experience.

"The grass may not always be greener on the other side, but at least its not brown"

nsxrunner, I felt your pain...

Yeah, I don't understand that either, but nsxmas, I'll trade my boss for yours, any second.

Mine doesn't realized how hard his worker is, I haven't gotten paid raise for last 3 years. I had many many overtime hours accumulated as Comp time and of course, will never get paid. (He rather me got away from work instead of pay me to work. One time I was so upset with the whole company I decided not going to work for 5 days, ignoring their cell and home phone calls. He welcomed me back with open arms. I cared about the company more than him.) He won't give us good equipment nor he thinks he needs good people to work with. If I leave, He believed he could find another college grads for $10 an hour, he/she could be a better one.

obviously I'm in a diff. industry and my skill level is different than yours. I don't need you feel sorry about me, but be thankful where you're at.

Hehe no worries for me yet, still got a place to live and an nsx in the garage, my priorities are straight...i think lol

I was a hardware specialist for companies like HP and Sun Microsystems, with certifications from Microsoft, Cisco and 3Com when I went back to college. Finished with my degree in Business/Finance from CSUF. Now I work at UPS woot  (No wonder that guy who killed the judge a few weeks back went nuts, he was a UPS drone)

Oh well, gotta do what you gotta do.

i'm curious, when was the last time you worked for a company this size and how does the role in your just-left company compare to the role you're stepping in to?

in any event, best wishes for success in the new gig - if you're in the "right one", small companies are a blast... nothin' like 'em.

be well.

You guys are lucky having only one boss.
When you own a business every customer is the boss.
