Stainless steel polish

Those of you who have installed stainless steel aftermarket headers/exhaust: what have you used as a polish/protectant? Does conventional wax/polish work under the heat conditions associated with these parts? Thanks,

The product I use is Maas - it comes in a small tube. Regardless of product, I have found it is much easier to keep the original shine if you polish the tips on a frequent basis *before* they turn gold or blue. Polish even if it looks like the tips don't need it. Much better than waiting until the tips have turned colors. BTDT.

I used to use a product on my motorcycle headers/exhaust, and it was great for removing the blueing, but I don't think it was a protectant. I'm wondering if there is something ( this Maas? ) that protects the metal in a way that wax/Zaino/Zymol/etal, protects the paint? Thanks.
 
On my previous rx7, the exhaust opening would turn black and the tips would slightly be blueish. When this happened, I got a can of turtle wax liquid chrome polish, an old thick sock, then poured polish on sock and started to rub it clean while it was still hot(usually after a drive).

The polish will sometimes bubble because it's really hot, but that didn't matter because it came out SUPER CLEAN AND NICE in the end. You might want to try it it might work for you.

The "key" I found to cleaning it really good was heat. It needs heat to be cleaned really good. It may work differently for others, but that's what worked for me

Thanks Lemans - Maas is *not* a protectant. It removes byproducts of oxidation and tarnish. It even says this on the tube. However, if you wait too long - see my post above - the oxidation layer will be thicker. Better to use Maas more frequently than not.

Something to think about - on an exhaust tip, wax nor polish will stand up to 3-400°F. Unfortunatley, if you want your stainless to look good, de-oxidize frequently.

Stainless is not the same as chrome, such as what the 91-94 OEM tips have. My OEM 95 tip tarnished - why, 'cuz it is stainless not chrome

Ok, I'm busting chops - I've never used Maas - I have quite enough different metal polishes - and I don't know of anything that will stand up to exhaust temperatures - but they do claim that "This polish adds long-lasting protection to surfaces previously treated with MAAS Polishing Creme."

The stuff I've been using is Flitz you can buy it at your local Hardware Store made in Germany and is a Metal Polish and Corrosion Protector really works great.
