Well at least I won't have to guess when a wheel fails!I bet it failed because they put that decal on it.;)

A SSR competition wheel failure happened last Friday at Thunderhill. The wheel has never been off orad, and didn't run over berms. This is not the first time I heard about SSR failure.

Hi Andrie,

I was there at the event, and could not really believe how they cracked, that was on my friends (babysmuf at i-Club) WRX, she just had some new SO-3's mounted on the rim about 2 weeks ago and she never had any prior problems with those rims.

The wheels were purchased used so the full history is not known, I suggested for her to contact The Tire Rack given that they are the official distributor of SSR wheels in the US.

Really scary, last time she had some problems with a crossdrilled and slotted rotor, the rotor had a big crack, hopefully babysmurf's bad luck is over

This tells alot. Who knows what kind of abuse the wheel was subjected to. It could have had a major impact with the original owner.

I saw this first hand at THill, too. It looked like a pretty clean failure. I would have thought these wheels would bend beyond usability before they'd crack like this.

Hi Ken, its Jeff, we met that day. Nice hanging out with you!

Ick gad...that's not good. Looks like clean breaks on two spokes. I call that seriously scary even given the fact that I've heard of SSR Comps. failing. It's very suspect that they are used wheels and not new. Who knows what could have happened previously.

EDIT: in the i-Club post, she says that she bought them new. What gives?

Quick update..

FYI,

Just got off the cell with babysmurf, the wheels were purchased used, but the wheels were only 2 month old before she obtained posession, according to her the previous owner did not have any incidents nor any track days on them.

Just like the folks here at nsxprime, the suby community is pretty tight and a lot of people know each other pretty well so I'm guessing that the history of the wheels is a clean one if the previous owner stated that.

The folks at Tire Rack have been contacted and will be investigating.

I know this thread is 6 months old, is there any update to this post? As I am very interested in this wheel for my NSX. If the update is not good, then I guess I will have to search for a new wheel.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

Check the following thread for details.

I hope that this helps.

BTW: Given stress *any* wheel will crack, either cast or a forged wheel.

comp H is wider wheels that is designed for high power car that needs wider tires.

as for the SSR comp wheels, few years ago I've already heard that tuner BMW from speed touring challenge had a tough time using those wheels in races. even the 17" wheels, (they're suppost to be stronger). They bent so many of them and had to change to different type of wheels.

I would rather have the ssr on the track, but I also have a set for the street.I have not had a failure in over 3 years of 10-20 track days per year.I have the older gunmetal comps as well.I would not poopoo the ssr comps because of the bad press of bmw wc racers failures nor this hpde failure.Imo they are great lightwgt easy to obtain wheels.

I offer smokin' prices on these, for those who want them. PM me for tire prices. (mount/bal free).

Comp
17x7.5 $332
17x8.0 $336
17x9.5 $366

18x9.5 $406

Comp-H
17x8.0 $366
17x10 $432
18x10 $476

Prices good through Dec 31st.

Prices should remain the same for 2005, but need to see if any costs go up for 05 before I list them for 05.

Thanks to all who have replied.

Mike
