I just noticed that the lower ball joint boot on the front, driver's side of my car has a split in it. How much of a job/how much $ is it to replace the boot/joint?

My local Acura dealer indicated that they would charge 3.5 hrs of labor to replace this ball joint boot. The first quote was to replace the entire control arm with the new ball joint attached--3.5 hrs labor. Wnen I pointed out that the boot could be purchased , they said that the labor would the same. This doesn't include an alignment. Does this sound right?

Boots can be replaced??? Both of my boots are split but the joints themselves are fine. This is great news for me. I was sweating buying 2 new BJ assm's. Do the boots come from Acura?

dude, you better get those boots and pray to god your ball joints aren't screwed. (and make sure you use the right tools when you separate them.) there is no such thing as a "ball joint assembly" on the nsx. one goes bad, you replace the whole control arm (which comes with the ball joint). :frown:

back to the original question.... 3.5 hours sounds steep (esp for one:confused: ). it's not hard and shouldn't take long with the right tools.

Make sure they know that if they break things, they have to replace it at their own cost.

very true. that may be a reason why they are charging so much....

BUT, i think that if you use the correct ball joint separator, you are relatively safe, as it supports the insert and prevents movement. now.... getting the right ball joint separator isn't cheap either  (anybody know where i can buy an adjustable one, like the one called out in the service manual, for less than 300 bucks????)

anywho, if your boots are messed up, either repair them or replace them asap. cheap insurance so you don't have to replace entire suspension components.

good luck, and let us know how it goes.

What a moron I am. I'm talking about my outer tie rod end boots. Looks like I'm buying a couple of tie rods soon.

An hour is more than enough to replace the lower control arm boot. As long as they don't touch the inner links, you do not need an alignment either.

It is doubtful the extra 2.5 hours covers a ruined arm. If it were my shop I would tell you the possibilities of a ruined control arm. Some come apart with no issue and some do not: not necessarily the fault of the tech or the lack of proper tools.

tie end boots ARE available separately
