I did a search on this but still have some remaining questions:

1) When I remove the tire, if I take off the aluminum mounting hardward as well, will this loosen the battery moutning? It looks as if it hold the battery in.

2) Has the spare changed at all since 91? Is it still the same setup (size, etc).

I know as soon as I pull it for good, I will get a flat the next day!!

Thanks.

Removing the spare and brace won't loosen the battery per se, but since it appears that the aluminum bar does provide support for the sheet metal on which the battery sits, there could be a degree of structural compromise. I have a lightweight battery and haven't had any issues with getting rid of the spare and the mounting hardware.

As for the spares, I believe that the 97+ probably have different sized spares to clear the larger front brakes introduced in the 97+, though I'm certain this info is in the FAQ.

That's correct; they made the spare bigger in '97.

It's easy to tell the difference between the two, because the wheel on the '91-96 spare is orange, and that of the '97+ is yellow.

I think this is why they changed the bracket that holds the spare in '97 - they must have needed additional clearance for the (presumably) larger spare.
