like someone said in the thread, its an urban legend and untrue. Just like the one about the frozen chicken cannon and NASA; and NASA spending millions to develop space pen when russians used a pencil. I get them all but thats all I remember now.
If you look at the External tank with the SRBs mounted on the side it barely fits out the door on the VAB. It was basically sized to fit out the same door from the Apollo program. Sizing the LOX/and liquid hydrogen tanks on a certain length came into it but the door width was a big factor. The ET is shipped by barge from Michloud in Louisana to Kennedy Space Center anyway.
That same door in the VAB also limits the height on the new Heavy launch vehicle now in development.
