Hi guys...

I'm having trouble installing these Sos billet cam plugs. It seems the orange color o rings are too thick. The cam plug o ring end up getting jam in between the cam holder and the head, am I missing something?

Chris, if you see this, please chime in.

Thnx in advance.

Henry.

Hi Henry,

Unfortunately no one works on the weekend (SOS) so they won't be getting back to you until tomorrow (our Tuesday and their Monday). Hope you figure it out before then. :)

Well what was the solution? This way if someone else has the same problem now they will be able to find the solution in a search. You're like a pioneer...lol

I went ahead and got some thinner o ring, problem solved.

It could very well be that mother Honda loves me so much and gave me an ultra special, one of a kind smaller cam holder from factory that's why the o ring supplied by Sos didn't work.

Hi henry,
I just purchased my 95 and during PPI I was told my cam plugs were leaking oil. Are these cam plugs DYI or should I take it to an acura dealer. What is the cost to fix these?
Thanks,
Vivek

It's definitely not a diy for a regular joe. Labor cost varies..... in the 3 digit range. It's not worth doing by itself, change it when doing timing belt or valve job or something.

Do a search on cam plugs or cam seal, you'll find all the info you need. Apparantly, all the oem cam seals leak, it's just a matter of time.

hth

Guess I should have thought about this one when I changed my timing belt last year, now it will be a while :D

Here are some pics:

Oem cam plug is around 31.5mm
sos cam plug with o ring is around 33.34

Pic of the sos cam plug compare to the oem cam plug on the cam holder. A perfect example of a good fit and not so good fit.

With a gap so wide, a razor blade fits in there with room to spare! A classic case of oversized o ring. Do you think oil will leak through that gap?

I bought 2 sizes of viton o rings for test fit: 3.0x24 and 2.62x25.07, measured at 32.16mm and 31.5mm (same as oem) respectively. Let's hope they work.

Do you think maybe it's a matter of the OEM o rings were just compressed after so many years? Have you talked to SOS to let them know the issues you've had trying to install them?

This is what happened to the sos supplied o ring after forceful torque down. Notice the shear on both sides of the o ring? The fat o ring got squeezed in between the cam holder and the head which created that gap.

The oem cam plug that I measured was brand new.

Yes, I've contacted sos about this before I went with my own solution.

hi Henry --

We have not had any problems so far including the numerous engines done in house. We have not seen the o-ring squeeze between the cam holder like in your photo - please see the photo attached. Thank you for supplying some photos, we'll retest these o-rings in place.

Cheers,
-- Chris

Henry,

Did you perhaps clean off the O rings prior to installation with a chemical that may have caused them to expand/swell a bit?

I took them out of the ziploc bag and on they go. O rings are usually very clean when they're new so no cleaning needed  Besides, these silicon o rings are not that easy to expand. I think 2mm larger in the o ring diameter is quite a lot. There must be a reason why the oem plug is 31.5mm and not 2mm larger.

Heck, what do I know? I'm no mechanic and surely no rubber o ring engineer but installing these plugs are not exactly rocket-science either. They either fit or don't fit. Maybe there's a trick to installing these that I don't know about?! Surely if they're that tricky, Chris would have sent me a detailed instructions already.

As I said, maybe my cam holder is really smaller than others for some odd reason?

Or maybe Chris just sent me the wrong o rings by mistake?

I think I've covered most of the excuses, pick one :)

Am I really the first to install these sos cam plugs outside the sos premise?

These things have been sitting in my center compartment for quote a while, and I am finally getting ready to put them in (adjust the valves) next week.

Any suggestions outside the procedure at Dan-o-land? Anybody else done this and needed different o-rings? If so, where'd you get them?
