Does anyone have one of these things?

I did a search and I didn't find much on it. See I am probobly the 1 or 2% in my school without an MP3 player and well I want one. I was thinking of an iPod, the new one with video, but for the price of a PSP I can play games as well. Sure it has 30Gb, but you can't play games. I want to keep it in my pocket and listen to it as much as I can, like before and after classes and hell even in them as well. Yes I know it is KINDA big compared to other MP3 playes and such but it is SO temping to buy. I have the green to pay for IT and one game. I do plan on finding homebrews to play like Sonic the hedgehog 3 or super mario bro's becuase they are fun. I did find some hacks to use the older Sony mem sticks. It sounds good to me but I just want to know if anyone has had any experience so to speak with it. I figure asking an adult group I would get better responces then with my peers at school. Thanks in advance.

if i had to choose between an ipod and a psp,.. i would go psp. i heard they might release a 4gig memory stick duo. but for now the 2 gig will do. you can always change your data. but good luck on finding a psp with a 1.50 firmware, (which came out on they're first batch) newer units come updated with 2.0 and up firmware (w/ internet browsing capabilities), which does not play any emulation nes, snes etc.,, but even without the emulation, and applications, the psp is still worth it. the screen is awesome, and battery life is decent better than any video ipod from what i heard. i too am a student and love having my psp during breaks or in class to entertain myself and my classmate w/ games, movies,tv shows, music video, emulations, and(cough) porn. LOL

if you really want emulation.

GP32X is a handheld console with about 200mhz when overclocked. but a neat feature is that you can play any type of console games. excluding PSP. Basically its a mini pentium processor equipped computer. It can run LINUX.

Some of the emulators for it are. of course theres whole shitload of roms on the internet. :)

SNES
NES
Gameboy Advanced
Gameboy Color
Neo Geo
Arcade Games
Sega Genesis
Playstation (in development)
QUAKE I, QUAKE II, DOOM

Note these are just some. More are in development.

And has the same features and even better. You can watch DivX movies, listen to MP3, runs on 2 AA batteries for good length of time. or hook up your LAN cable to play someone on internet.

Here are some pics of GP32X2 running Final Fantasy 7

There are downloads to downgrade the firmware for the emu stuff and its free. The 4gb dou thing is a waste of my money, I found out how to use the older sticks with the psp, cost is 30 bux but its worth it and cheaper.

I deffnetly think I am going to buy this. Most likely preowned so I can cash some cash.

if u want something for music, buy a music player.
2GB of music isn't alot, at all.

The PSP is a cool little thing, but i wouldn't buy it for MP3 stuff, i'd buy it for videogames.

Damn technology, I bought nanos for all 4 kids and the wife............................................... there goes my new carbon fiber wing:biggrin:

Pacemaker, I use the PSP as my main entertainment as you wish to do. It is a bit bulky for running, but other than that it lends itself well while I work out at the gym. The latest upgrades (2.6) are nice and if you don't mind losing some emulator duties you will love it.

Hi

I think Akira3d is the inhouse expert on the PSP. I think he left us to go to a country without internet for a while. That is probably the reason why he has not replied here.

I am sure that when he gets near a wlan zone he will reply with his PSP ofcourse :)

Akira has posted a few threads here about the PSP and what he uses it for. I am too lazy to do a search though :)

Regards

Hi

Not sure when he will be back sorry.

Try this:

Search - advanced search
Username : akira3d
word: PSP

I got quite a few hits, maybe some of those threads are interesting to you.

Thank you VERY much. One thing, your avatar really scares me. No joke, I feel like I am being stared down by some really scary mafia guy. Tell me? Is that you?

That Avatar reminds me of the devils advocate! I like it!

I'll second the recommendation for the PSP, its an amazing little device. I bought one when they first came out, along with Tony Hawk. Didn't play it much until recently when GTA came out. I can't put it down now, now I'm anxiously awaiting Gran Turismo. A unique feature in GTA is the ability to utilize custom in game soundtracks (similar to Xbox), I'd like to see it used in other games.

Ive got both an IPod and a PSP. I use each for their primary purpose, but if I had got the PSP first, I doubt Id have bought the IPod. Myself, I havent bothered with the hacks. I just play games in airports and when Ive got time to kill. Its amazing to travel with, the screen is outstanding.

I say that the killer app would be a bluetooth PSP with a bluetooth IPod. All the IPod is is storage when you think of it and the best part of the PSP is the screen. Store movies or whatever on the IPod and watch them on the PSP wireless.

Now I know you can plug it in to a computer with a USB cable. So, if you take lets say a 20gb mini HDD, could you possibly hook it up to the PSP? Like a possible Female/Female cable sort of thing. Anyone will think it will work?

Hi

My avatar is Jim Profit aka Adrian Pasdar.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115323/

He plays a evil guy in that series. Out on dvd. I highly recommend it.

Now he has a evil eye on all of you here on Prime

I can't believe my posts haven't come up in searches for PSP stuff. I've definitely mentioned it a few times.

I'm currently in Vietnam and very glad I brought my PSP, six games, 4.5 GB worth of entertainment on MemorySticks (not only for the long and numerous flights we've been taking during our tour, but also because there haven't been many American TV channels at the hotels we've been staying at...and the weather has been incredibly wet), and an amplified headphone splitter (so my wife can watch shows with me on the planes). On my sticks, I have the full season four of 24 (shhh, don't spoil anything...I'm currently at 2pm), two feature films, several emulators, and several hours of music...all with the intent that I'll be repurposing the sticks for photographs as I finish watching and listening to the content I've brought with me. I've already freed over a gig.

All of the hotels I've been staying at have had free Internet, but only a couple have had wi-fi (and not necessarily within or within reach of our rooms). This is my first time visiting Prime since leaving a week ago!

The PSP is a great portable and versatile media device...don't leave home without one. The wifi Internet browsing is an excellent bonus, but the thing really needs a keyboard for answering posts and writing blogs about this trip!

That would be nice. I have a 2.5" 80Gb portable disc that would be great for this.

I try to say to myself no more gadgets. An Ipod to use in the NSX is higher on the list though, but the PSP has sneaked into the list now.

Hi Eric, good to hear from you. Eat some pho for me!!

And be sure to take lots of pictures, like you always do.

What happened to snowboarding?

I'm going to go to Tahoe with TucsonNSX in Feb, but the thought of snowboarding in Mammoth sounds tempting too.

Have a good time!!

Hey John, Frank...in case you guys haven't noticed, I've been blogging about the trip

Valerie and I have been eating enough pho for everyone we know on NSX Prime! :D

Back to PSP, another thing it really needs is a built-in file manager. Currently, the only way to manage its media content from a source other than Memory Stick Duos is by connecting a PC via USB. A file manager would allow me to transfer files to and from a USB drive...and I carry a 20GB harddrive that also lacks a file manager, but allows me to copy files off my various memory cards (specifically for backing up photos).

Incidentally, I don't view buying Memory Stick Duos as part of the cost of owning a PSP, because I also use them in my digital cameras (these small sticks fit within adapters that work in devices that use Compact Flash or standard size Memory Sticks)

I found yesterday a new kind of promo thingy....Sony GIGA-pack.....somes w/ a gig of memory. Now I am deffenetly going to buy it.
