Interesting Sony is now getting into the Navi business. They have quite a bit of catch up to do against Garmin and the likes. With Sony resources, look out for them in a few more years.
it looks pretty cool... but i'd rather have something thats a more permanent install and fits the interior of the car

I just bought a navigation unit like this one (portable). Before purchasing I did some little research on available models and so on. The other Sony nav. unit that's sold in Europe, did not get good reviews on almost every website I checked.
If you want to be sure, be patient for a couple of months and reviews/tests of this will show up on the internet (www.google.com) or, buy a Garmin
You might want to consider this company as well, Navigon (US website) - the nav. unit I bought has software from this company and I am very satisfied.
They also have solutions for PDA navigation, if you are considering this
