Well someone decided to key my car. Never had this happen before. The scratches appears to be in the clear coat only, but are deep enough in several areas to catch my fingernail.

I'm considering trying Dr Colorchip or wetsanding with 2K and 3K grit, but anyone have any suggestions for professional help before I try myself? I'm open to anywhere in the Bay but closer to East Bay or Dublin would be great.

Thanks.

Damn man. Sorry to hear that.

There's a vid on YouTube from ammonyc that covers this. It ain't gonna be perfect.

If you decide to do it, let me know. I have the detailing tools to buff out the wet sanding if you need it.

Sorry to hear this. I live in the East bay and always concerned about this happening to my car too. Can you let us know where this occurred, how long u left car unattended , and possible suggestions to avoid this in the future? This really sucks and puts a damper on owning a nice car.

If it's catching on his finger nail, it's going to be too deep to remove with compound. Only way to really fix it would be to repaint it. Otherwise, you could attempt to hide it with touch up paint + sanding + compound + polish etc.

B2finity, we need to meet up sometime to see if there is any hope for my paint. I basically used 3m cutting compound with a cutting wheel and it removed tons of scratches and looks like a mirror in the shade. But when sun hits it, you see a haze. I bought the 3m compound remover but my buffers are crap and not easily controllable. Also, got the ctsc in. You can check it out and I might just let ya drive it.

Jinks that haze is completely normal. What needs to be done next is a less harsh polish to follow it up. Either 1 or two step depending on what results you want to achieve and from there, glaze + sealant + wax etc etc etc It never ends I tell ya!

I figured you knew the answer. If your free at all in the next two weeks on the weekend, message me. Work can be performed in my garage and out of the hot sun.

Here are some answers and progress update:

Swung by my local favorite car wash that does detail work as well. They attacked it with compound and polish and were able to reduce the visibility by a lot, maybe 70% or so. There are a few parts that are deeper than the rest that are visible, you kind of have to know what you are looking for. I ordered a Dr Colorchip kit to see if that can help make those less visible. My strategy has been to go from least aggressive to most and hopefully it works.

If I need to spray, I'd probably go ahead and get my hood and my front bumper resprayed as well since my bumper has a lot of chips and my hood has some issues as well. However, my budget hadn't planned for this, of course, and I have my funds earmarked for some other things I would hate to postpone.
dennis, really appreciate the offer, I hope it doesn't come to that. Like Jinks my car could use a good detail anyway, and I have a random orbital I bought but haven't used so maybe we should do a detail day.
94710, this happened while parked on the curb in front of my house. I was really surprised as I've been in this neighborhood a little over a year and it doesn't seem like something that would happen here. I live in the Montage development right next to Las Positas College in Livermore. My car is normally in the garage but I was working on a few projects and didn't have any room the last 2 weeks. I cleaned up and made room today of course.

if you want the car painted correctly we can do it at my facility in Sacramento i have done over 50 nsx complete paint jobs 916-821-3456 but its not cheap

I have my Dr Colorchip kit but haven't had a chancec to use it yet. Also, my local carwash/detail shop was able to buff about 90% or more out so you really have to look for it. Of course I've found many other areas that need touch up so I'll be using the Dr Color Chip kit soon.

Sorry to hear - it's every car guys nightmare! Sounds like you are getting it fixed well.

What's a well trusted car details shop in the East Bay/South Bay? I heard of Spider and had good reviews on Yelp.

Anyone here ever use VEPA in Pleasanton?

Yeah it was quite shocking to see, my neighborhood is typically really quiet and seemingly easygoing, but who knows?

I was recommended the following by a professional detailer who was too busy to Opticoat my car, but haven't tried any yet:

Joe @ OCDetailing
Jeff @ immaculate reflections (cquartz finest in lieu of Opticoat)
Sean at Apollo detailing
Jason at spiders auto glass

Given just the subject line...I think the repair for someone who keyed my car would have to be done by an expert emergency room!
