Smoked Rear Tail Lights...

I remember someone talking about spray painting their side markers with Night Shade or something like that (allows light out but appears "smoked")..

My question: Does anyone know if its possible to effectively "smoke" the rear taillights using a product like that? I know I could buy the JDM set, but $700 is too much for me to spend on just taillights i guess.

it takes skill and effort to do it right.
It probably takes more effort to create a dust less , right temp, humidity for Pefect finish.
I painted my taillight on my daily driven accord... but only with a "good enough" results, my problem is that it is way too difficult to find a dust less place when the paint is starting to cure/ dry off, and something is going to stick to that.

With the nsx tail lights, since it's bigger size compare to other makes' tail light, it will only be more difficult.

Painting the taillights means making your brake lights less visible at a distance, and your taillights less visible at night. NOT a good idea, unless you really like the idea of increasing your chances of getting rear-ended.

Perhaps you might want to consider buying a set of the JDM or Euro version taillights, which are designed for sufficient brightness but use a darker red than the North American version.

It's as simple as spraying with "candy" paint - see below for example of how it looks. Particularly on the yellow, it looks so much better in the darker shade.

Is the 3rd brake light darkened on the JDM kit?

Based on these photos, I would say yes:

It's available from Science of Speed; I suggest contacting Chris@SoS for more information.

Yes it is. I converted my NSX to all Honda and the spoiler brake light was the only piece left to finish the conversion. It matches the darker plastic of the JDM taillights. The stock U.S. spoiler brake light didn't appear to be that different in color shade from the JDM taillights since it's so thin. Upon close inspection though, you'll see a difference. Since I came across this part, I picked it up to make my Honda conversion complete (actually I have but not installed my Honda cassette door yet).

SNDSOUL, this might be off topic, but would you please share with me that what kind of exhaust are you using? and if have you have the picture of your exhaust set up, would you please post it? Thanks.

That is the Apexi N1 exhaust. I had the pipes custom fitted with no cats to my Comptech headers. I will probably be selling it sometime soon. Its sound is comparable to the Taitec. Kinda loud, but smooth.

The difference in color is quite noticeable in the picture posted by d'Ecosse above.

Another option would be to tint the rear lights with film from a tint shop.

ak and I are thinking of doing this as one of our winter projects.

I believe the picture posted by d'Ecosse is NOT of a JDM dark tail, but of a custom painted "candy" paint according to his post. I think it is a darker shade than the OEM JDM/EDM tails.

It is a candy paint sprayed over the tail lights. I didn't do the spoiler cause I am going to replace it with something else. I just haven't decided on which one yet. They are pretty dark, probably more then the JDM, but since I have never seen any, I don't know for sure

i did this on my crx lights before i went with clear ones. Do this at your own risk 'cos illeagal in my country and dangerous as nsxtasy pointed out, but that never stops anyone! It was the rage about 5 years ago. Do not use tint film on your lights it will look terrible.

1) take off the lights
2) clean them well
3) apply nightshade (or whatever brand the can is called) to desired darkness
4) top clear coat over the top, keeps the shiny look, the spray tint makes it look dull and cheap by itself.
(if you want do it fast use a hairdryer, but be careful off over heating)
5) After the paint has cured, get some finishing paint polish and you're done!
