Could someone give me an expaination on what a smarTenna is. Thanx

Briefly, a delay mechanism to keep the oem antenna from raising when you are listening to CD's instead of the radio. Very cool and very easy to install.

Smartenna is a neat little device that is easy to install, but should have been built into the stereo in the first place. What it does is, when listening to CD's, it overrides the stereo commands to raise the antenna and it keeps it down. Afterall, if you aren't listening to the radio, why should the antenna be up, i.e the head unit in the dash should have had this feature installed, but some engineer was too lazy to incorporate it. The only downfall of the Smartenna, is it is ignorant of use of the cassette deck in the dash. So if you are listening to cassettes, your antenna is waving in the air, adding drag, looking ugly, and accomplishing nothing. If you listen to CD's and want your antenna down, buy it. I did and it works great.

If you are listening to the radio and then switch to CDs, does the smartenna lower the antenna? Or does it only keep the antenna from going up if you star with CDs?

I do believe it lowers the antenna.

Yes, It lowers it whenever CD is activated. There is a 3-5 sec. delay before it goes down and also before it goes back up when switching back to radio. Just disconnect the antenna as I have........ Who listens to the radio anyway? Cd's or tapes........keep that ugly antenna down. I had the smartenna for a couple years on my last NSX and now have disconnected the antenna on the new one. I like the discon idea better.

Nsxotic,
maybe you do not know that the latest model Smartenna does not require any wire cutting? Your new NSX wouldn't have any no-come-back mod if you install it.

I had the old design model in my red and now have the latest one in the silver.

Is there some kit that can void the antenna altogher??? I mean the Hond Accord that I know of (the `96) does not have an antenna at all and the radio reception is still great...

The reason the reception in the NSX is okay with the antenna mast disconnected is that it's a diversity antenna. There are two antennas: the mast, and the top third of the hatch window (the veins that look like the defogger but aren't). The radio compares the signal between the two and selects the stronger one. So even if you disconnect the mast, there's still an antenna in operation.
