This seems pretty basic, but worth checking before f#* anything up. The shift knob should just unscrew to remove, yes? It seems like I'm turning the shaft as well when I try to remove it. The shop manual sheds no light, besides the exploded view. Any hints will be appreciated! Tom

I hate to highjack this thread, but does anyone know the thread size on the shifter? I have an aftermarket knob and want to put a bolt on the shifter to hold the knob in the right position.

There are two alignment keys on the boot. If the key and slots are not aligned, the boot can' t be pull down. Once the boot is down, just unscrew. It takes about 10 to 12 completed turns. I just did this last week. I am looking for a yellow leather shift knob (either all yellow or black and yellow). Does anyone have pictures of their yellow shift knob that they can post?

Slamstrom, thanks for the info. To clairify, I just need to rotate the boot right below the knob untill I feel it line up and allow itself to be lowered? Thanks for your help! Tom

It will be easier to rotate the knob. The key is attached to the knob, and the slot is on the boot ring (the chrome piece on top of the boot). Just move the knob to either the righ or left about 5 to 10 degrees, and it should slide right out. There is a small detent on the key, so you will fell a small click once the slot disengage from the key.
