Has anybody here successfully "boxed in" their automatic garage door opener (to include insulation) in order to make it quieter and have it "blend" into the ceiling?

Get a screw drive opener much quieter and a lot less work than boxing in. I am not even sure you could box in a chain drive opener.

Thanks...
I've got 3 different kinds (traditional chain, screw, and wire cable)...I
kind of just want to make them blend into the ceiling more.

I have a Wayne Dalton idrive and I'm not sure it's any quieter. Does anyone else here have one and can tell me differently?

When I lived in Chicago, I insulated all of the panels of the 4 section aluminum 2 car garage door with 3 1/2 inch thick pink fiberglas insulation. It actually was a fairly simple and straightforward job using small pieces of wood to captivate it to each length of panel.
It had the added benefit of damping the noise from the door in half. I was surprised how much of the noise is actuallly just the dooor clanging around so much.
I had a Genie screw drive.

Ive got a belt drive now and its the most silent opener Ive ever come across. That, plus my new triple insulated top of the line garage door, im a happy camper !

I have a Genie screw drive as well. It's not very quite at all. I've heard newer chain drives that were much quiter. I've heard good things about the Wayne Dalton idrives, but don't know anyone who's actually used them. I've always wanted to make an insulated cover for it, but thought I'd be crazy to do it. I'm glad I'm not the only one. Off topic a bit; I did succesfully make an insulated cabinet with scrap plywood, 2x4's and fiberglass insulation for my air compressor. I didn't cost me a dime due to new homes being built all around me.

Here is a pic of my I drive. I just installed another I drive on the other garage door. Works great.

That Dalton opener looks nice (room for a lift)..I have a Genie Accelerator ..it make less noise than the door does...but it is ugly and takes up ceiling space:frown:

Remember door is still in the way for a lift but you probably get 1/2 a foot or so.

Silencing the compressor...

GREAT IDEA...My next litle project!!!
I almost put it outside! Maybe I'll make a sturdy box/table...and it may not "walk around.
Gotta think about how to do the area around the gauges/knobs.

You can get rid of some of the mechanical noise by means of a cover. But the problem is that the vibration is still transferred into the home and throughout the garage.

You might want to look at this product.

Good Point...but detached garage :-)

Wow! Where can you buy those at? I've been looking for something like that for 3 years now! I was tempted to try and rig up my own. Thanks for the link. Most of my noise is coming from the rail though. It tends to "walk" a little and won't stay tight against the ceiling of my garage. (I think DSM made it:wink: )If I mount it any lower it will hit the top of the garage door as it's going up/down. I need to find a way to keep it tight against the ceiling.

You have to re-mount the opener and cut the mounting rails down. See the picture on page 6 of this pdf. As to where to buy, here is a link to their distributors.

yeah I don't see how the door is in the way..unless you open it:tongue:

Even when the door is fully open it will not interfere with the using of the lift since I have a high rise door which will only cover part of the trunk when the car is on the lift and the door is up. See post #9.
