Has anybody here successfully "boxed in" their automatic garage door opener (to include insulation) in order to make it quieter and have it "blend" into the ceiling?

steveny said:Get a screw drive opener much quieter and a lot less work than boxing in. I am not even sure you could box in a chain drive opener.

I've heard good things about the Wayne Dalton idrives, but don't know anyone who's actually used them. I've always wanted to make an insulated cover for it, but thought I'd be crazy to do it. I'm glad I'm not the only one. Off topic a bit; I did succesfully make an insulated cabinet with scrap plywood, 2x4's and fiberglass insulation for my air compressor. I didn't cost me a dime due to new homes being built all around me.
You can get rid of some of the mechanical noise by means of a cover. But the problem is that the vibration is still transferred into the home and throughout the garage.White92 said:I've always wanted to make an insulated cover for it, but thought I'd be crazy to do it. You might want to look at this product.
White92 said:Wow! Where can you buy those at? I've been looking for something like that for 3 years now! I was tempted to try and rig up my own. Thanks for the link. Most of my noise is coming from the rail though. It tends to "walk" a little and won't stay tight against the ceiling of my garage. (I think DSM made it:wink: )If I mount it any lower it will hit the top of the garage door as it's going up/down. I need to find a way to keep it tight against the ceiling.

zahntech said:yeah I don't see how the door is in the way..unless you open it:tongue:
