I'm thinking of shipping my Imola to Toronto permanently this fall for NSXPO. Besides the www.riv.ca guidelines does anyone know if I'm able to get a temporary plate and insurance for 2 weeks?

What do these Gumballers or Bullrun participants do when entering NA? Can anyone point me in the direction of where to look? I'm sure the Ontario Government Registry could help or is that privatized?

I've got storage covered while I'm living in Dubai so that's a non-issue.

I'm not just shipping the Imola back for NSXPO...Laurel and I will be moving back to Toronto in 2010 so its only cool to bring the NSX back to participate in NSXPO 09.

The man to ask is Stuart (Red). If someone can help you with that Cam, it's him.

What method do you plan to use to ship it over?

y dont u keep your insurance and your plates on it for now ... until you permenately change the address?

I'll be happy to watch over it for the next year or so until you guys get back

Stu will take one look at it and start bidding you. His only complaint with his current faster Spa Yellow NSX is that it doesnt match his hair.

I checked with the folks at www.riv.ca and because the car would be staying I'd need to go thru the complete importation process. Ideally, as I'm not there I wonder if there is someone I can pay to do that.

Once the car is imported then I'd need to try and get either temporary plates or register the car. I can't keep the Dubai plates as the authorities here take them back when exporting the car.

Shipping the car over is a breeze and quite cheap. I just need to figure out how to register the car being a Non-Resident of Canada? I might need to transfer the ownership to my brother-in-law...hmmm.

Well I'm not sure about Ontario , but in B.C. , you don't need a driver's license , just I.D. to register or even insure a vehicle , I know many people from overseas who have cars registered here.

I told you, ship it to me. I'll store it on the showroom floor until you get back, then you can drive it up to Canada in time for XPO. I'm somewhat kidding of course, but if this scenario would actually help you out, I'm more than happy to help arrange it.

You don't have to register a car just to keep it in the country. You would only register it so that you can put plates on it and drive it. There is one inspection that is required after the car is imported into Canada and that is an "out of country inspection". This is simple after fulfilling the requirements of the RIV for safety and the like which will be easy given all the cars are made the same. All you will need is DRL (daytime running lights) which can be done quite easily with relays and some jumper wire. Once that step is done, simply store the car and when you return to Canada you can register it. From what I know here in Alberta, there is nothing I can think of that requires you to prove you are a citizen of Canada. They do require a permenant address so that you can get a Drivers License, but if you have the DL, then you will have no problems registering the car. :)

You are more than welcome to PM me and talk more about what I know and/or PM me so that we can exchange phone numbers and talk over the phone on what may help your case. I've imported 5 cars in the past 5 years from the US, so well know what is required for that effort. I believe that coming from other countries is entirely the same and as long as emmissions and safety are all in line with the Dept of Transportation, you will have no issues. A bit of a process, but all in all pretty straight forward when you go through it all.

Bringing the car in shouldn't be a problem, you may need to register it in your name, you're a Canadian Citizen so you can import it no prob. As far as the RIV the only issue is the inspection, which is at any Canadian Tire.

All you need is a good customs broker and you're set. As far as insurance, thats easy, your brother's broker can do it for you.

Update,

I've spoken to Willz and they can clear the car thru customs for me and get it registered. Insurance shouldn't be an issue.

Just waiting on quotes from the shipping agency here in Dubai. I'm in the Logistics field and I know vessel and container rates have dropped alot in the past two months.

Might get this done after all!

Is there a prize for longest travelled participant or "Guy who has shipped more NSX's globally than anyone else"? Actually that prize might go to the king of Bahrain who owns 70+ NSX's...read that somewhere.

Thanks for the advice guys...

Yep, but I don't think The King of Bahrain will be attending NSXPO 09 in Toronto....so you will win the Prize.
