Short-Shift kit install....

Just ordered this and a new shift knob (the one on the far right) for the ride and was wondering what exactly is involved in installing both?

I'll be keeping the shift boot that came with the car... its leather with red stitching.

Do I have to take the console apart?

Can I possibly swap out the climate control sensor / fan at the same time without removing the console cover?

Any other caveats?

Thanks!

It's pretty obvious the console needs to be removed, you need access to the linkage in order to install the short shift kit.

You can install it without removing the console. However its more of a pain in the butt and gets in the way. You just gotta lift it up the whole time. Becareful of of cracking the skinny parts of the console and trim. You can use a credit card type card to pop the vents out from what I hear.

Oh and that dave's shift block has a tendency of not fitting on the shifter very easily. Dave says send it to him if it doesn't wanna go on and he'll grind it down. Just remember that it's supposed to be a TIGHT fit. I had to grind mine forever to get it to even want to consider going on. Then I had to crank down on the nut to press it to fit. Mine sorta clanks going in to 4th gear now though. Occasionally 3rd too. I emailed and pm dave to see what symptoms of over grinding does. Never got an answer. I'm thinking of tossing the thing away and just going short stalk since I'm having sorta crappy results with mine.

Oh and the install specs calls for very small amounts of torque like 2 lb ft (example) . So have a small torque wrench handy. Also it will require an allen key/wrench that will also need to be torqued down to spec in a small increment. So have a small allen socket type thing ready also. torque specs are small, I said screw it and just tightened it by hand. I believe something about using a little grease on something there too. So have a lil grease handy, just a small amount. Also look up recent past threads about the short shift install. I know the last one I posted in, we put up lots of pictures to help out. Trust me, it helps out ALOT to actually see how it goes on. The instructions kinda suck.

If you're gonna work on anything behind the console, now is the time to do it. Ex. change bulbs, remove/repair/replace climate control, cd player, display gel sheets, run stereo stuff. etc.

If your center console is stock or just have a simple stereo install, just remove it. It's easier and involves only a couple more screw, like less than 8 or something.

So I wasn't the only one who had problems installing it huh? Mine was tight as well and would not go on. I eventually got it on and it works fine however it will be for sale very soon.

I ground mine down pretty good. I feel it's still very tight fitting but exactly HOW tight is it supposed to be? Considered selling it, but it might just go in the misc. parts bucket.

I've done a couple of these installs.

Yes, you have to take the console apart, the instructions for which should have come with the kit. If you do not have the instructions you can find them in this thread, which has great info on the install, especially post #21.

If your kit is too tight to slip into place, it may require you to file the shift linkage. I have had one kit that fit fine and another that required a small amount of filing.

The only interference I have seen is with the JDM type R shift lever. All the US ones I have done have been a simple press on.

Like Koolaid says, if you get frustrated send it to me and will push them together, no charge.

Ahh, this makes sense. Ken installed mine and had to file it a bit. Coincidentally, I went with the short stalk from SOS.

I actually thought the install was a breeze. I've taken my console out numerous times so that wasn't a big deal. Once I did and looked at the shifter and pictured in my mind how it was supposed to go together, I just went at it and put it in. Total time was ~30 mins.
No grinding issues at all.

I also offer shortened stock shift levers, $40 exchange. I have one to send out if anyone is interested.

Is Dave's short shifter kit the same one that SoS sells?

Yea my console has some wear and tear on it ... and in some places its starting to bubble up.... I want to have it either replaced by a silver console or paint it and do the doors at the same time while I'm at it... anyone have any suggestions there? I know this is a bit off topic ;)

I replaced mine with a new one. It was just under $400!
