Shipping a hood

Hi all,

I am trying to purchase a hood from a Prime seller and they cant organise shipping of the hood from Socal to West Artesia Blvd, Compton

Can anyone give me a few names of companies who will pickup from the seller and drop to my freight forwarder in Compton?

Appreciate any help.

If you are dropping to "your" Freight Forwarder in Compton, then they should be able to arrange the delivery for you. I'm a FF in Canada and we can all arrange both directions. Speak with your FF to arrange the pickup, and they can prepare all the documents you will need. If not, contact a local Forward Air office and they will be able to help you.

You don't say where it's being shipped from, but Compton is right in the middle of SoCal. I don't understand why it should be so complicated to move a hood a short distance (say, 10-30 miles). You've asked the seller and they can't drive it to Compton? And you've asked the freight forwarder and they can't go pick it up? I find that surprising. Heck, they could call a taxi and ask for a minivan. You're saying that the freight forwarder doesn't know how to get items transported within their own local area?

Hi, its early in the piece, I am working out the cost of this before I commit. I am shipping to NZ so its not going to be cheap and I know nothing of how freight works in the US.

The seller is assisting and can drop to my freight forwarder.

Yes, that's the tough part - tough to arrange, and of course it won't be inexpensive. You'll need to get it packed for shipment, and you'll need to make sure your freight forwarder can handle a shipment with its weight and dimensions.

That makes much more sense.

What about UPS? I shipped several items where they packaged the item (and I insured it) and sent. Granted, the destroyed one of the items (sorry JE!) but with insurance and their packaging, and assuming they ship international, I would check with them.

You're referring to the UPS Store, which is basically a service that packs items for you (and charges quite a premium for doing so). Whoever packs it, there are multiple ways of shipping freight internationally, including not only UPS, but also FedEx, and the postal service, and DHL (which does a big international business but not much domestically in the States). Your freight forwarding service should be familiar with all of them, and the best way to get it across the Pacific Ocean.

DON"T use UPS, FED EX or DHL as they are commercial carriers.........Freight Forwarders have or get contract rates which can be half the price or less of a "tariff" rate that you will pay (unless you have a commercial account) the brand name carriers............WE (Forwarders) have much better rates and it doesn't matter what the size is - we move it...........FF never use the 'common carriers' and will opt to use airlines or ocean carriers depending on your time allocations. If I were not retired, I'd be able to move this for around $1000 so that should give you an idea of the ocean freight rate......plus pick up, etc. but still not a big shipment and easily moved.

Hey Gecko...question for you. Who is obligated to pay import tariffs on something shipped into the USA? Background is that I bought something from someone on eBay that shipped from South Africa. It arrived after much back and forth with customs (where I was asked for a value; which I provided and noted that I was not accepting any charges) and then WHAM, I get a stupid bill from DHL. It's only $36 but it is the principle of it all. Should I not have been asked to accept financial responsibility? Much thanks in advance.

I will be using Kiwi Shipping. They specialise in freighting to NZ. I used them prior to bring in a 66 Cadillac and it went smooth as silk.
