Shift Lever Pressure / Transmission Wear / NSX + Others

I've read here that downward pressure on the NSX shift lever will, over time, damage the transmission on our cars. I believe this advice refers to the manual transmissions. My question is does this advice also apply to the new generation of manu-matics? I recently bought one of these (non-Acura, sorry keN) and like to rest my hand on the shift lever - but not if I'm causing damage.

In a manual transmission there is a direct mechanical connection between the shifter and the syncros and other internal rotating parts, so as you apply any pressure to the gearshift, you could be applying that pressure to the syncro slider/shift fork/syncro and bearings. In an automatic transmission the level usually controls a series of hydraulic valves, so there is no direct mechanical contact with internal moving parts.

I beleive in newer trasnmissions, i.e. paddle shifter, spring loaded +/- shift levers, etc, they still offer no "mechanical" connection. I cannot say this definitively for every one though:).

I really think the effect of resting your hand on the transmission is minimal. Especially on the NSX which is using cable type. The force acting downward really give no tension to any of the cable, but just resting on the pivot point.

Hi Andrie,

In fact "downward" I agree, the issue becomes, sometimes you do not realize you can be putting pressure front or back. I think of it like being taught at driving school, once you shift, back to the steering wheel:).

Hope all is well.

Mark Basch posted on this a couple of years ago, saying that he had replaced parts in a few NSX transmissions due to "resting" on the gear shift lever on street driven NSX's.

What about using heavier shift knob (~ 12oz.)? Will that cause wear? :(

Nope. It will take a lot more force than what a few extra ounces could produce... So go ahead and install that marble shift knob! :D
