Service cost shocker!!

I just called my local Acura dealer and asked for a quote for both a 45K and a 60K service. Being a good NSXer I checked the costs in the FAQs, and remembering that my 35K service was around $600 in California, I fell over when the guy told me $1,000 for the 45K and $2,200 for the 60K.

Did I just get a good deal from my California dealer and are the costs in the FAQs that outdated, or is this guy nuts?

Any input regarding your experience would be appreciated before I telephone the service manager.

Doug

I can't remember off hand what I paid for the 60K, but it was more than $2,200. I had the timing belt, H2O, and some other minor things.

While it should not be that significant, keep in mind that the prices on Honda parts that are used for these types of services have increased 10-20% over the past 2 years. I believe the prices quoted on NSXPrime are much older than this time period.

The prices do seem on the high end.

Cheers,

Well, I contacted the competition and here is what I was quoted: For the 45K the price is $455 and for the 60K it's $980. Both are the standard services, valve adjustment, etc.

Thanks for the information you folks provided.

The main question is what year is the car, is it due for TB waterpump Maybe the first quote was including them??
Actually sounds like they didnt want to be bothered with it, and if they had to they would just make you pay out the XX?

I'm sure Mike is correct. The 60K should be about 800. to 850. The t-belt was included at the >2000. quote, and ommited from the <1000. quote.
Some shops omit it from the quote because they think you may have it done, or because they want to get you in the door then upsell you. Its a great case for consumer awareness.

The 45K is not the same service, as indicated by the lower price you were quoted at the second shop. Spark plugs are done at 60, but not 45 and valves are not required but every 30.

And, IMHO, price should always be second to who has the best experience and best record for consumer satisfaction.

Thanks for the information. The car is a 1998 with a little over 44,000 miles, so the TB and water are not an issue. I wanted to get the 60K due to the age of the vehicle. Both shops are NSX dealers. In fact the lower quote came from a shop that has had some special days for NSX owners along with lunch and a group drive. The shop with the higher quote did blow me off.

In fact I asked the guy why the 60K was so much more expensive with the major difference is spark plugs.

Honda's recommendation for the timing belt and water pump replacement on a 1998 NSX is every 105,000 miles or 7 years, whichever comes first. According to their recommended maintenance schedule, they are due now.

As usual NSXTASY, thanks for the insight. I was only looking at the milage for the TB and not the number of years.

We've been wondering where you were.

I just had my 60,000 mile service and the basic service was $650 but I also had them do the timing belt and water pump which made it $1830.

NSX services are odd because there is more of a HUGE gap in what people pay than I have seen with almost any other car.

I think that's because of variation in the services being quoted, rather than the price of those services. And you can chalk this up to a combination of (a) lack of familiarity with the recommended NSX maintenance schedule, and (b) the existence of many examples of low mileage NSXs (half the cars with 5K miles/year or less) compared with almost all other cars which are typically driven 10-20K miles/year.

For example, I have heard places quote 60K services that include a timing belt and water pump replacement which are not recommended at that interval, and other places quote 90K services for a '91-96 NSX that don't (even though the TB is recommended for replacement at that time). Furthermore, you have the time interval in the recommendation that often comes into play, yet some dealers may recognize it, others may not.

I think if you looked at quotes for specific services (e.g. replace timing belt and water pump) - you would see less disparity in prices than if you looked at quotes for a particular service interval (e.g. 60K service). And if you stuck with places that do a lot of NSX service work, you would see less disparity than if you included places that don't.
