Sequential/Paddleshift/Flatshift

Finally, got a video up demonstrating our setup. The car is stock engine wise, although is a bit quicker with short gears and weighs a little over 1000kg.

Off the top of my head you're looking at £25-30k which is around $40k for everything. Expensive, but the car is being built for endurance racing, so needs to work well!

Our difficulty was the crank case, which are made in batches. There are quite a few second hand gearboxes on the market now as they were widely used by European touring cars (now using Xtrac). Have just snapped up a second Hewland for our Elise too.

Maybe one day the NSX will have a central seat like the Elise too!

The Aston was really holding you up in the corners. Your lap times dropped a good second or so after you got by him. Nice driving!

That's what I am talking about!! Center drive FTW! I had this idea but it seemed to difficult to tackle. What steering rack could you use? I think Quaiffe makes one.

The price of the whole set-up seems cost prohibitive to me. I wish it was better. Are the gears really loud? As loud as the exhaust in the midrange?

Ikeya produces a paddleshift conversion for S2000 (which uses solenoids to actuate the shifter position and clutch engagement), not as elegant a solution as a complete replacement gearbox, but an interesting solution.

Yeah, you can get the Ikeya for the NSX. You still need a clutch though.

The Hewland is very loud, but then it is never intended as a road 'box so no surprises there. The gearbox whine is just as loud as the engine...

The 'paddleshift' uses a solenoid and computer to actuate the clutch for you, directly above the transmission housing. It's a different product from the Formula Shifter they released a few years ago (which is now out of production).

This new product, which appears to still be under development, has adjustable modes (street, automatic, circuit), and seems relatively sophisticated for a tuner company product. There is even a call on Ikeya's website for OEM applications; perhaps an optimistic goal, but interesting none the less.

You will find in a lot of international race series, paddle shift is not permitted in the rules. However, it is fine in our series, so we've done it! As you can imagine, we can have both hands on the wheel at all times, which is advantageous.

We are building the car for 24hr events, so driving comfort is paramount. The geartronics sytem actually performs automatic upchanges, so it's almost like an auto!! :biggrin:
 
It looked worse than it was, but the wiring loom was an expensive loss. All back together now ready for next season :biggrin:
