Security - other than a kill switch, what else can you do about keeping the NSX safe?

Since my car got stolen 2 months ago out of my driveway while i was sleeping, I am very concerned about the security of my soon to be NSX. (cant believe i'm actually getting one! hehe) I plan on having the bombass security system with a kill switch so no one can make off with the whole car, but what else can I do? I know there probably isnt much, but there might be something I'm missing... what kind of security system comes on the NSX if any? Also, what would be the best system to get for the price? Thanks -Electro

My only other suggestions would be to cover the car anytime it's in your driveway and have LoJac installed. The first makes it less obvious to those driving by, the second helps catch anyone who does manager to steal it.

The stock security system is just like most other OEM alarms. It only activates if you open a door or the trunk while the car is locked. No glass break sensor, etc.

Good aftermarket alarms are cheap. Don't shop on price - you can get a really top of the line system for just a few hundred dollars. Clifford is really good but someone recently said they went out of business. Alpine is decent.

Do you know of any car covers that come with a steel cable that you could lock with a large pad lock or something? If not, I'm sure something could be made out of some material that is hard to cut or tear... like sewing the cable inside a kevlar sleeve and then sewing that into the edge of the car cover with a pad lock that you can tighten... dont know if that already exists, but it'd be cool if it did b/c i sure would buy one! -Electro

I spoke with the guy that installed my Clifford, and he told me that Clifford was bought by another company and will remain unchanged.

Clifford makes some very nice alarms. Most of their better system comes with a car-jacking feature. If you open your door while the car is running, you have 20 seconds to enter a code on a two-button keypad after the door is closed or your car shuts off. I think this is a nice feature as you hear about car-jackings all the time. Sometimes it's a pain, as you have to do it every time you start the car, but I think it's a small sacrifice in the long run.

I'd like to give my $.02 on LowJac. I think the system is great if you know your car has been stolen. If your car sits in the driveway all night long, by the time you get up in the morning and discover it's gone, LowJac helps the police find what's left of your car. I speak from experience. My car was stolen at work. When I left to go home at 5pm, this is when I discover my car was gone. All I got back was a shell, as they had the car for 7 plus hours. I do recommend LowJac 100%, just don't rely on it as your only source of protection.

Once last note on Clifford alarms. One of their models has a feature (or upgrade) that uses two brains to make the alarm work. The second brain is placed in the car in a different location from the master brain. They talk to each other via some wireless interface. The second brain can be tied into another part of the car, like the fuel pump, ignition system, etc.. If the master brain is disconnected/removed by a thief, the other brain doesn't receive the signal to disarm and the car won't start. This is pretty cool in my book.

Good luck!

That is great news because as you noted their alarms are some of the best! Thanks for the info.

Re: Lojac - nothing is 100% but having one puts the odds much more in your favor.

The NSX is not particularly prone to theft... probably because it's rather conspicuous.

Do you know of any car covers that come with a steel cable that you could lock with a large pad lock or something?

Most places that sell car covers also sell a steel cable that you can lock - usually with a rather small padlock, though.

I have A Clifford 600-G4 system in my NSX. This one has the 'blackjackx' feature, and let me tell you, it really is a pain in the ass. It's gone off with guestionmarks hovering over my head so many times already, and believe me i do know a lot about electronics, and also on alarmsystems. At the other hand it really gives me a save feeling when i leave the car on the street.
Recently i found out that car-thieves (bad spelling), leave the car with this sort of alarmsystem on its spot, but thats because this system comes with a label witch shows a approved alarm (don't know if you have something like that in the stats, its a label on the window).
If you understand how this system is build up (it's like a ethernet-network), you'll understand that it's pretty hard to harwire it. It also comes with a 'smart' alarm controller, which prevents the system from giving false alarm.

Personaly i am not really afraid the car is getting nicked, coz here there only like 10 or 15 driving in the whole country, which makes it not desireble car to steal.

But at the end, if they really want your car they will have it, whatever you do.

Oh yes, nearly forgot, the system including putting it in the car costed here in Holland nearly Hfl 2000,- which is USD 850.........

Hope this helps,

Dutchy

hey hey,

The most sure-fire way to prevent theft of any car, is a removable steering wheel. I think most of the racing steering wheels (Momo, etc) are removable, either that, you can make them removable, so yer NSX can't be stolen.

What type of alarm system comes installed OEM on the NSX? Does it have a kill switch? If not, that'll be the first thing I put on the car... -E

There a was good thread on the www.honda-acura.net board about car security a month ago. It was titled 'Gone in 60 seconds'. Unfortunately I can't find the link and the site is huge. If was either in the audio/electronic section or the off-topic section. Sorry I don't have more info. What I got out it was that getting a fuel cut-off and a starter kill (normally open) would be a good first step.

No OEM security system has a kill switch.
