Ive checked the Faq and DIY areas but cant find any help. Maybe you guys can help me. Im trying to remove the seats from my car but the passenger side recline switch stopped working. How can I get the seat to move or how can I get to the motor to see if I can fix it? The problem is there is a speaker box behind the seat that I can't get out without the seat being all the way forward. And I cant reach the mount bolts with the box in the car. Any help would be GREATLY APRECIATED!!!!

Thanks guys!

OK, trying to be helpful here, but I have not dealt with this problem.

Here would be my plan of attack:
1. Each switch operation of the seat has their own fuse, for a total of 4 fuses. Make sure they are all in order.

2. Despite the speaker box: You should be able to remove the 4 bolts holding down the seat. Though you will probably cuss a bit and spend a couple of hours removing them, I have found that seat bolts tend to be rather tight.

You are probably going to need quite a collection of sockets, extensions and universals. Your basic 675 piece Craftsman set will do nicely. Only use 6pt sockets on the rear most bolts, very long extensions and some universals.

There are 4 fuses!!!????

I was only able to locate 2. Im going to have to check again. With the box in it seems imposible    Im on the verge of cutting the stubborn bastard out. Ive already tried to get to the rear and the front bolts with no success.

Thanks for your help Drew, I will definatly try to locate all 4 fuses. Hope thats all it takes. Even If I feel like a jackass after.

I just checked the manual, there are 4 fuses.

More things to do:
with a small phillips bit and a 1/4" drive socket you probably can remove the seat switch cover/bracket. You can test for power, ground and investigate the problem a bit.

If the motor is truly bad (unlikely)
You might also be able to get to the reclining seat motor by removing the seat cover and manually working with the linkages.

Damn Drew, you my boy!!!!

Looks like I got work to do tonight. When you say remove the seat cover, do you mean remove the leather??? My car is at home and Im not too sure where the motor is....

Ill figure it out..
Thanks alot Drew, Ill keep you posted.

Actually the seat recliner motors do go bad. I have done two already :). You will have to remove the leather from the seat back to get to the motor.

There is an electrical connector in the seat back behind the cushion you can get to in from the front and apply 12V to it to see if the motor moves. Go in from the crack between the back cushion and the side cushion and feel around, I just cannot recall if it is on the inside edge of the seat back or the outside edge. Feel around, you can do this WITHOUT removing the seat:).

Oh, The motor assy is about $200, if I recall.

Sorry for the confusion. I meant the FRONT of the seatback. You do not need to get to the back of the seat:)

Sorry to ressurect an old thread, but I'm having an issue with the recliner on my driver seat. When pressing the recline switch back or forward, you can hear the motor, however, the seat back does not move.

So I'm assuming the motor is still good since it sounds like its working. Is there a gear or track that the motor turns that could have fallen off or become bent? Is it difficult to verify this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

This will help.

#6 in the drawing is the recline motor. If the motor is spinning and the seat is not moving something with the gearing is messed up. It can either be within the motor assy (likely) or an issue with the seat gear and cross rod.

Regardless the seat will need to come apart, and that means it needs to come out. Look at the drawing carefully. You will see you can unwrap the leather on that side only to gain access to the recliner motor. I recall one screw holding the assy to the seat frame, but check carefully.
