I was going thru the mail today at the shop and to my surprise i see a Auction flyer. It is for a public auction at Comptech for May22. Selling all the machine tools and equipment. My first reaction was to try to ignore it think of it as a joke, I know they closed up shop but it is hitting kinda close to home. I might end up going to this auction, see if I can pick up a few needed items for our shop, I am feeling kinda weird about that.

Was kinda hoping someone would buy this lock stock and barrel and the kits would be on sale again in the near future.

I guess this isn't going to be the case.

Well unless someone buys the brand and already has all their own machinery and tooling.

I just dont get it....I've read some of the Comtech threads but they seemed like no one knew for sure why they closed up. What was the actually reason?

Not making money. i would guess.

well the tuning market has too much competition, added inflation in taxes and gas and equal a belly up.

also im sure management failed to plan for this type of event.

comptech has been around for awhile so theories can be up the wing wang.

I don't think any of you are planning on going because it is located at:
1900 North Austin, Unit # 4W, Chicago, IL

Wow, lots of cool machines. The stuff will go for a song, 20 cents on the dollar for 10+ YO machines. If there is some one out there interested in Comptech, this is the way I would buy it, at auction.

Wish I could make it down there...

I WANT those lifts. However it requires a $500 registration fee. I didn't see if it was refundable or not, or even if it will go towards the purchase. So I'm not gonna take the chance of being out bidded and lose that much cash. The rest of the machinery I'd love but have no space and surely can't afford the cnc machines.

Also, I wonder who's responsible for loading the machinery? I mean it's HEAVY stuff and no one really wants to drag a forklift around with them. Then I'm sure they don't want to risk having people damage other equipment trying to get out a huge cnc machine with a forklift. I definitely don't have a forklift handy and can't just PICK UP a lift with a couple hands.

I am still a bit sour at them because they left me hanging waiting for them a couple of months ago when I was in negotiations to buy a certain larger item from them that was being sold off. We negotiated and I had my ducks in a row, I was under the impression that a price was agreed upon, the President of Comptech promised to called me back on 4 occasions and NEVER did. I had to assume he sold it to someone else without even telling me. I was not a happy camper. :frown:

Sounds like you have not been to an auction, pretty standard stuff as far as registration fees. They have lots of guys around to help load small stuff, loading and shipping is arranged day of sale, usually one has an agreed upon number of days to remove a machine. The auction company moves things around inside of the buildings, might even load for you. A CNC center like those pictured will weight 6,000-12,000 lb, depending on the size so you need special equipment to move it. There are companies that do nothing but moving and setting up machines like this.

Dave ,I thought you would be all over that auction.

John,
Like I said wish I had time...
