Vintage BMWs set to kick off Upper Peninsula tour
BMW CCA News
August 29, 2006
The 1939 327/28 Coupe of Goetz Pfafflin will be one of the vintage BMWs touring Michicgan’s Upper Peninsula, then parade lapping at Road America Sept. 9.A group of vintage BMWs will traverse Michigan and its Upper Peninsula in the annual tour of the BMW Vintage & Classic Car Club of America Sept. 3-9. The event ends at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI, the final day coinciding with the Badger Bimmers Oktoberfast driving school.
According to event organizer Goetz Pfafflin of the Rocky Mountain chapter, there will be a pre-event a pre-event kick-off at Don Dethlefsen's Werk Shop shop outside Chicago Sunday morning, Sep. 3, before we travel north to Elkhart Lake and the Osthoff Resort, the official start and end point. There will five driving days (Sept. 4-8) across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, with stop-overs in Munising, Machinac Island, Marquette and Houghton, along with a side trip across the majestic Mackinac Bridge Sept. 5, before ferrying over to Mackinac Island for an evening at the Grand Hotel.
Saturday, Sept. 9, the vintage cars will be back at Road America for a showing and parade laps, jointly arranged with the Badger Chapter of the BMW CCA as part of the Sept. 8-10 OktoberFAST driving school. The school is closed out but it’s still possible to watch the event Saturday. For details, see the Badger Bimmer website.
“In 2004 we ran a 2,500 mile two-week Marathon on the east coast: 13 states, starting at BMW NA in NJ, with a weekend at Lime Rock, then heading north to Bar Harbor, from there south to Hershey, down the Blur Ridge Parkway (with a side-trip to The Homestead), ending up in Spartanburg,” Pfafflin says. “In 2005 we ran a 1,200 mile Holiday in Colorado, also a fabulous tour, and so this year we will be in Michigan.”
The 2006 tour is closed out. To keep in touch about future vintage activities, see the BMW Vintage & Classic Car Club site at www.bmwvccca.com. A vintage BMW is 25 years (or more) old, so that includes not just 2002s, Bavarias and historic BMWs, but also some of the earlier 5 Series and 3 Series BMWs.
Check back for photos from the tour.
