Hi

I read a article in a norwegian magazine about Rowan Atkinson. He has a McLaren F1, but also a blue NSX which he uses as a everyday car.

Not sure what model he has. If somebody finds a translation tool from norwegian to english they can read the article here:

Rowan Atkinson

I can also translate when I get the time and post it here.

This should be added to the FAQ :)

Regards

And I hear he used to drive a MINI Cooper. ;)

Now I know why I like him so much. ;)

I thought he crashed his McLaren F1 2 or 3 years ago???

I have also heard that...but maybe he bought another one..?

The article has a lot of pictures from the Oulten Park racetrack where he races Aston Martin Vantage Zagato's.

It says in the article that he drives away in the McLaren after the interview. So I guess he bought a new one or got it fixed. It has a picture of it and it is brown.

Regards

Martin, I'll do it for you:

"...Ta for eksempel hans andre favorittbruksbil, en elektrisk blå Honda
(Acura) NSX.

In case that was difficult to understand, here is the article. LOL.

"... Let's look at his second favourite daily driver, an electric blue Honda (Acura) NSX. "I'm attracted to cars that nobody else buys." The NSX is a classic car in that category, because nobody else will buy it, and at the same time it's a unique and fantastic car. It's wonderfully compact, simple and modest. And Honda are still producing it, even if it's not logical in a commercial/financial way. That's something I admire. "He drives his McLaren F1 and Honda everywhere. For the more frequent drives to London, he uses the NSX most."

I could not find the magazine in the news stand by the way.

Hi

I am not sure what Vi Menn it came with..it was a "carextra"..

Thanks for the translation.

Regards

IMO it is absolutely logic to be impressed with the NSX when you love the Mc Laren F1 because an F1 is simply the absolute NSX concept.

That would be the goal for Honda to achieve: giving F1 performance at a cheaper cost and with higher engine output efficiency.

Imagine a more than 150 hp / liter engine.

Only about 4,2 liters to make a 625 hp output...

Fun to dream....

I guess then, we are all "nobodies", and since the saying goes something like "Nobody is Perfect", that speak volumes for all of us, no ?;)

I think what BITeR means is that some of us chose the NSX because it is not the standard "status" car like a 911 or an SL550. The majority of those owners are more impressed with the price than with anything unique or personally resonating about their choice. And when I drive around town I see many 911s but have yet to be on the same road at the same time as another NSX (which is probably good 'cuz I can get 'racy' when someone else is driving 'my' car).:D :D :D

It's interesting that both of those cars are mentioned in the same breath. Not just because they are both phenomenal cars, with the F1 being VERY expensive and VERY rare, but Gordon Murray who designed the McLaren F1 was also a NSX fan as well. I read in one of my books that he owned one for 4 years and praised the NSX. Then to move on to designing the F1 with McLaren. How cool would that be between choosing to drive the F1 or the NSX for the day!

Ouch!

I have a copy of that article in the Queens English if it's of interest to anybody....?

Hi

Could you scan it and post it somewhere?

Seems like the article in "Vi Menn" is old...maybe very old since it said he drove away in the McLaren.

Damn..it said nothing about beeing a "rewrite article"

Regards

...bear with me & I'll see what I can do....from what I can remember it wasn't a very good article & quite short but if you are still interested I'll post it somewhere no problems.

McLaren F1

To clear up the story on Rowan's McLaren F1... He indeed did damage the car in 1997 as the article suggests. He ran into the back of another car.

Despite how bad it looks. The damage was mostly superficial. It was returned to the factory and was repaired to as new condition. He still owns, drives and tracks the car quite regularly. Rowan is a first class gentleman that knows a great deal about cars and his driving skills are very good. The incident with hitting the other car had more to it than meets the eye. There was an article I have somewhere that Rowan described in greater detail what happened. I will see if I can dig it up.

The McLaren is quite different from the NSX in the regard of damage. In most cases, the McLaren is repairable after an accident, even quite heavy ones. The NSX can be rendered unrepairable, or at least financially so rather quickly. The trade of aluminum versus carbon fiber.

Nixxer: maybe you can also find an article about his recent Aston Martin crash in Oulton (?) - I failed in the attempt.

BTW: I don't think that repairing a carbon fibre car is cheaper than a NSX repair - especialy when it's a McLaren F1. I remember former BMW chairman Pischetsrieder who totalled a F 1 on a bavarian country road - nothing to repair. Another F 1 was totalled in the same year on the german Autobahn near Darmstadt. That were about 1.5 Million Euro lost in only 2 accidents.

....sorry, had a look today, but I think I threw it away...

McLaren Repair

I suppose, I should have been a bit more clear. Yes, the cost of repair notwithstanding, both cars could be fixed. Relative to value, the NSX is more often better suited for parts, at least what is left salvagable. The McLaren is so incredibly strong as a result of the carbon fiber full tub design, that it is most often far more repairable given the same impact to the structure between cars. In other words, the McLaren can take a hit with less overall damage to the car than the NSX. Therein lies the difference between Carbon Fiber and Aluminum. Barring cost. :)

Considering cost, some time ago I had an off road shunt with my NSX, bumped the front. Visually, it didn't look to bad, no damage aft of the front bulkhead, windshield ok. Over $66,000 in parts damaged, not counting paint and labor. The car was only worth $34,000 (1991).

A McLaren that was wrecked in California about 2 years ago. Upside down, looked bad. Repaired $300,000 (rough estimate from conversations with McLaren Cars Ltd, and others)

There have been a few McLarens that have been total write offs. Compare that to the number of cars that have been damaged for one reason or another, even those that have had an upside down event, other than those two you mentioned and one other, XP1 have been unrepairable. Of the two you mentioned there is some debate as to whether or not both cars were actually completely written off. There is evidence to suggest that possibly both cars were repaired. No kidding. XP1 was wrecked and burned in Africa.

Wrecked McLaren

I must correct myself, there is another completely destroyed McLaren that comes to mind. Chris Dawes of England crashed a McLaren at speed (~160mph) into a tree. All three onboard were killed. The car was nearly unrecognizable.

There is also the famous wreck of a high executive at BMW did with his daughter and wife on board during a test driving session in Germany I believe. Everyone made it out of it ok, except the car.

Didn't he crash it while driving to a dental appointment?
He was getting dressed in the car & brushing his teeth at the time. :D
(those of u who've seen that episode should be ROFL by now ;) )
