He was killed during the Malaysia Moto GP race today. May he rest in peace.

I haven't watched the race yet, just woke up early, flipped on the TV and saw the ticker across the bottom of the screen. Been a tough week for the motorsport's world.:frown:

I'm in the UK and met Marco last year. We had a chat about Italy and racing in general. No need to put the pics on here given what's happened. He really put a spark into MotoGP with his own brand of racing the established guys. I watched the race live and as soon as I saw the incident unfold I had a horrible feeling.

Valentino Rossi was a long standing close friend of Marco's. Given his unfortunate part in the incident and the fact that he is not having a great season himself, I wouldn't be surprised if this makes him consider retiring.

RIP Marco and I hope you race safe with your angels....:(

Just watched the race after friends posted on Facebook that he had passed away. He was having a good battle with Bautista on the Suzuki before the accident. RIP Marco.

This is a bad month for racing :frown:

RIP Marco. Far too easy to forget the risks these individuals undertake. Motorcycle racers in particular know that any race could be their last; all it takes is a bad roll or awkward landing and it's over. These guys are at the absolute limit the entire race.

We met him at Seca, very vivacious person. He was an extremely aggressive rider. Even pedrosa seemed deeply effected and they were at each others throats after their incident. Very sad month for motoring.

Truely a sad time in MotoGP
I race the Champion cup Series (CCS) Southeast and hit a rider just like Colin did. Luckily he was ok with just a badly busted shoulder. There's just no where to go in that situation..

Very sad

Looks like it was Rossi's bike that hit Simoncelli's head and knocked off his helmet.

Not really proper to cut and paste a whole article, but in this case I think it will be forgiven.

As a final tribute to the memory of Marco Simoncelli, I have "pasted" an interview with his father, who was at track side on Sunday which was originally posted on the Autosport.com website. It says it all really....................
..

Paolo Simoncelli has paid his respects to a 'special, honest and pure son' and expressed his gratitude at the outpouring of grief following Marco Simoncelli's fatal accident in the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Speaking to Italian media, Paolo Simoncelli said the support shown in the wake of the accident had provided comfort, and insisted there was no blame to be apportioned.

"Marco was a very special person, and perhaps people have understood what he was like. If he had to swear he would, he was like that. Most of all he was honest, he was really pure," said Simoncelli Sr.

"On top of that he was a warrior, and maybe that's why he died. Had he let the bike go...but last Sunday he wanted to win. He was again the Marco we had at the beginning of the season, but now he knew what to do, he knew everything."

Greeted by hundreds of fans when he landed in Rome with his son's body, Paolo said: "Honestly I couldn't believe it: it would be bullshit if I said I'm happy, but it pleases me. We didn't realise all this, but it's a very nice thing.

"Tomorrow evening, after the end of the funeral, we'll be alone. It'll be terrible. But now I have you and all the people that come visit us. That can only please us.

"Marco was always available with all the journalists, as with all the people that would come to disturb him while he was eating. In fact he would scold me when I complained. That's how he was.

"Marco was never judged badly, he was always judged for what he was and for the way he presented himself. I loved him, and he loved me. Marco was great and that's it. What a shame.

"He needed everything around him to work. He needed Aligi Deganello - his guru and chief technician - his team, and his dad, who would piss him off sometimes, as he would say. Before the start we would shake hands and hug. I did that on Sunday too, but I guess I got something wrong. It didn't go as usual.

Man its still so unreal to me... Very sad time for MotoGP
