One of the greatest footballers ever. Some of his colorful qoutes....

"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars - the rest I just squandered."

"I used to go missing a lot...Miss Canada, Miss United Kingdom, Miss World..."

(On David Beckham) "He cannot kick with his left foot, he cannot head a ball, he cannot tackle and he doesn't score many goals. Apart from that he's alright."

"If I had been born ugly, you would never have heard of Pelé" [4]

"In 1969 I gave up women and alcohol. It was the worst 20 minutes of my life."

"Pelé called me the greatest footballer in the world. That is the ultimate salute to my life."

I'm a little embarrsed by this but I don't know who that is. I consider myself a pretty big sports fan but the name escapes me.

I used the European description for a Soccer player ( "Footballer"). He is considered one of the best ( if not THE best ) Soccer player ever. However, he's from a country that didn't see World Cup Action ( Northern Ireland ), so he's not a household name like Pele. His biggest fame was playing for Manchester United-the most famous pro sports team in the world-in the 60's and 70's. Became equally famous for his playboy lifestyle.

He's the "fifth Beatle". Best European soccer player by the age of 22. Manchester United player right?

Yes. This is funny too :

" as the waiter said as he delivered champagne to George Best, in bed with Miss World and their winnings from the casino,

"where did it all go wrong George?"

That explains it then. I don't follow soccer at all.

this from the london times, all legal applies:

"World says goodbye to Best
By John Goodbody

FOOTBALL will unite today in paying tribute to George Best, who died yesterday in a West London hospital after a long struggle against the effects of alcoholism. He was 59..."

sounded like a lot of fun until we got to the part about alcoholism... a shame.

Simple truth is, he didn't die - he killed himself.

Particularly upsetting is that he had a liver transplant (as a direct consequence of the chronic alcoholism) 3 years ago - then continued to binge. There was quite an outcry at the time from those on the waiting list, perhaps more deservedly. It's hard to disagree it was a "waste" & could probably gone to someone, not to say more deserving necessarily, but certainly more respectful of the "gift".

None of that takes away from the talent genius - but yet another in a long line of those similarly blessed with artistic talent who dealt with their success by resorting to excess.

You are correct. Alcohol can be a terrible thing. Many lives have been ruined by it. Because of its history and traditional place in society, it's accepted, yet too many people fall victim to its charm and do such foolish actions that can result in life changing consequences. I'm done preaching...sorry everyone...-just be careful while you have fun, that's all.
