right headlamp won't pop up

Try these three first - if not one of these it gets more complicated!

1) Check fuse # 42 in fuse box under hood; (#42 is for right pop-up, #43 is for left)

2) Swap the left & right retractor relays with each other & see if problem follows the relay or stays with the light assembly

3) Swap the left & right retractor cut relays with each other & see if problem stays with the relay or the light.

See below for locations of these components:

If the above does not work, it is probably the retractor motor that needs to be replaced. My left headlight does the same thing. I have a new motor on order but just for fun I took the old one apart to see if I could fix it and it had water in it. It only works part way part of the time, so I will just wait for the new motor to come in.

Re: LEFT headlight won't pop up

I'm having the same problem as of last night - the left motor won't raise the headlight. Today I took it apart, checked both fuses, all four relays and I tested the motor per the service manual instructions - all parts check out good. Everything looks good but power does not arrive to the switch that connects the car wiring to the motor plug. If I connect the power directly to the motor it runs fine. Are there any other possible parts that could be involved? Another relay, fuse, etc.?

Any suggestions from anyone before I take it into the dealer? Thank you.

If you have doen the test per the manual then it should have told to you check continuity of the wiring. If you have power not getting to the motor but up to the part before the motor then you have an open in the wire somewhere and you need to find it. Mine would work kind of intermitently and it turned out to be the motor was bad but would not work with both connected. Though I did have power at the headlight connector.

I checked the 4 relays by doing a continuity check on the terminals and then applying power to it and checking again, and also by switching relays between left and right - all good. I checked the motor by disconnecting it from the car harness and applying an external power supply to terminals A and D as per service manual - the motor runs continuously and smoothly. I've tried both switches, the headlight and the panel switches and both work the right door fine but not the left.

I can't believe that there is an open in the wiring inside the harness that goes to the motor. The car is a '99 that I bought new in '99, has been in a warm garage all its life, has never seen rain and it only has 28K miles. There has got to be something obvious and simple that I'm missing. Thanks again for any help you can give me.

I fixed it and I thought I would pass on the information just in case someone needs it in the future.

The problem apparently was caused by interference with some of the stuff I had to cram in there to install the HID kit a couple of years ago. It looks like the motor turned itself off (breaker?) and when I tested it by the manual's instructions it recycled/reset itself and came back to life. I thought there was no power coming to the switch but it turned out that power was coming to the switch but it does not simply come through the two wires I was testing but rather by a combination of the six wires attached to the switch - when I plugged in the motor again it resumed normal operation. Thanks for the help 53heloFE.

Glad to hear you got it figured out!!!
