I am looking to replace my rear view mirror with one that has compass/temp/(and maybe homelink). I know Gentex made them in the past. Are there any newer tech devices that won't require me to run temp sensor wires visibly around the windshield (bluetooth???).

Let me know if you find anything. There were threads a few years ago bout this. The best was Gentex GENK60 which apparently is discontinued. It had map lights, homelink, temp/compass, and autodim. The best around is genk50 with no map lights. The map lights seem cool, does anybody have any alternatives or a genk60 lying around--I would be interested, thanks.

Keep looking on ebay...that's where I found my genk60. Did a search and didn't find anything but you can inquire from the dealers that have the other models. BTW, thoroughly read the tips on how to have it mounted...PM me for some tips as I had 2 pros try and fail several times.

Thanks for the link. Basically on search I've found I can get either Autodim/Temp/Compass/Homelink or Autodim/Temp/Comass/Map Lights. The Gen60K combined those features.

I'll hunt around for awhile--how long ago did you find yours on EBay? Seems like they've been discontinued for a few years so will have to make decision of homelink vs map lights. I would use homelink daily so that seems to be more important although the advantage of lights is worth waiting a bid. Once I get it, I will PM you for some pointers...thanks.

could oem mirror from other vehicles be used? all you need is power source, right?

you can buy a toyota or ford mirrors on ebay for 100 bucks- with built in compass and homelink buttons.

Just make sure you stay away from any of the Exon mirrors. Or any mirror featuring a UV display indication. They are gunk. I bought one and am now regretting it. Stick with a Gentex, Donnelly or MITO mirror. The UV display mirror looks like this:

The actual dimming part works great as you can see in the video above (I cover up the light sensors then I use my cell phone to light them up again). The only problem with the mirror is you can't adjust the contrast on the display. It ends up looking like this:

You could try taking the mirror apart, and adding a film over the section that the digits are, to dim it you should still be able to see the numbers during the day!!

You can use a mirror from another OEM, but will need the button and harness kit though. You may also purchase a GENTEX auto-dimming mirror from http://stores.shop.ebay.com/WembleySells__W0QQ_armrsZ1. He is a reputable seller.

Site was nice...gave a nice comparison of newer versions of mirrors vs the older ones. I guess the newer have a sturdier mount and other improvement in build quality. For those with map lights, how often do you use them anyways? Maybe I'll just bite the bullet and forget the lights.

Hi Jeff, I have been looking into replacing my rearview mirror with homelink eversince I purchased my car. However, I was told my Gentex that it will not mount on NSX. The only thing I can do is to remove it and place a new one. I didn't want to mess with that so I had to drop the idea. If you knew a way to make it work, please let me know!!!! I would love to upgrade... Thank you in advance.

This won't solve that problem.

UPDATE: THIS WILL NOT WORK ON A NSX.

I have the Genk60 on my NSX. I had a couple of pros try commercial grade glass glue a few times without luck. We gave the wedge a couple of days to dry and it still failed to stick to the windshield. I tried superglue, 3M rearview mirror glue etc. without luck. We did the blue painters tape as well to "hold" the wedge up while the glues dried..again failed! What worked for me is an adhesive I got from Home Depot..I will have to see if I still have the packaging. I then taped the wedge to the glass. The next step I think is the key difference, I wedged a golf putter (with the cover still on for padding) to keep pressure on the wedge...left it there for 24 hours. Worked like a charm. Whatever you do, KEEP the wiring harness attached to the mirror in case the mount fails so it doesn't scratch your center console/stereo. Also don't want to risk breaking the mirror of course.

In summary, it took about 5 or 6 failed/frustrating attempts before I got it to stick.

just looked around ebay- you can buy a mirror with homelink and harness plug for $50-75.

I have the Gentex 50 (without maplights) and I had the same problem with getting the mount to stick to the windshield. I used a Napa kit and I think I went through 4 kits before I got someone who did windshield installs for Autowave (who did my windshield to used some industrial stuff). I don't know what it was but it worked great.

I ran the temp sensor next to the OEM temp sensor in the front of the car in the bumper.

I haven't done one in a couple of years but I never had an install on this not work. I have done scores of them.

Tape on the outside of the windshield where you want the tab.
Clean the inside of the windshield where you want the tab.
Clean the new tab.
Spray/wipe primer on windshield where you want the tab and put primer on tab as well, on the side to be bonded.
Let primer dry.
Put one drop of adhesive on the tab.
Press tab on windshield under tape that you put on the outside. Do not, twist or wiggle and hold tight in place with your hand for 2 minutes.
Let go and let it dry another 2-3 minutes and put the mirror on.
Don't yank or fuss too much with the mirror until it sets overnight.
Never had one fail yet.
I use to do so many I had a larger kit of glue and primer but now just use the one job Permatex Kit or Loctite kit that NAPA sells.

Maybe the stuff has changed.

A windshield pro did this exact procedure with commercial grade glue without luck. He couldn't understand why it wouldn't hold. It failed 3 or 4 times on him. Maybe the stuff has changed esp. with the environmental restrictions we have here in CA.

There was a time the tabs didn't come on replacement windshields but now they almost always do. He may not have much experience at this.

Gluing a tab to a NSX windshield is no different than gluing a tab to any other windshield.

Far as I can see they don't make a California version as the VOC content is so small.

Something's not right if a simple thing like gluing a tab on a windshield isn't going well.

Try someone else.

sounds like surface contamination- the only liquid that will not leave any residue is pure alcohol, window and surface cleaners may indeed be the problem.
