Looks like someone walked by my NSX and ran a blade about 6 inches. That cut in the damage is causing paint to delaminate. Strickly cosmetic and its bugging me and im thinking of calling state farm and pay the $100 deductible and get this fixed since it would be the most cost effective way.

My question is, will this show up in carfax even though its just cosmetic repair? If so, it might just be worth to pay out of pocket. How much does a good paint shop charge to repaint rear bumper??

BTW, I woudnt be surprised if I did this myself in my garage by walking by with a blade or flathead to close to my car.

some pics, hard to see but its there.

Carfax collects information from a variety of sources. They often include any police report filed on an incident (accident, vandalism, etc). They sometimes include insurance claims filed on an incident. AFAIK they rarely if ever include any damage where someone pays for the repair himself at a body shop, in the absence of any other source of that information.

If you know of a particular body shop, you could phone them and they might or might not be able to give you a price range over the phone. But it would be better to drive it to their body shop for an estimate. 99.99 percent of all body shops are happy to give repair estimates for free, when they have the ability to look at the damage in person.

I would be more concerned about a claim on my insurance record than if it showed on carfax. Insurance companys track number of claims as well as size of claims.

I am thinking of doing 02 rear conversion but not until at least a year from now (need to spread my spending). I wonder if it would be best to leave it as is until then and then have rear bumper painted with rear valence.

Is there something I can apply to the paint to "seal" the cut in paint so it wont get worse until then? Clear coat, clear bra type material??

would I be better off paying for paint repair myself (which im sure shop will say they need to pain whole bumper) or pay only $100 deductible to state farm and have them take care of it?
Get the estimate and find out how much it will cost before deciding. For example, if the cost is $150, you probably want to pay for it yourself; if it's $1500, you might want to let them pick up the tab.

Makes sense.

I'm not sure what would get worse; it's plastic so it's not like it's going to rust or anything. If the paint peels slightly, well, that's probably coming off or getting sanded anyway.

Of course, you can also ask whatever body shop would be doing the work. Even if you're not going to do it until you do the conversion, they can give you advice on whether there's any need to do anything now.

i called my insurance agent and he says it will not raise my premium and they dont report to carfax for those small ones (since it wasnt a accident and its cosmetic). $100 deductible I might do it. Plus he knows of a good shop in long beach and since I have WW rear spats to put on (they look good with diffuser) they can paint those for me at the same time.

I will get some estimate but im sure theyre going to want to paint whole bumper and it wont be cheap.
