My daily driver's hood and trunk paint is fading badly. The clearcoat on the hood is disappearing at an alarming rate.

I don't really care about the appearance. However, I don't want any risk of rusting, even though the car is in the desert.

Do you guys think this hood/trunk needs to be painted, or don't worry about it?

If you don't care how it looks then leave it. But a cheapo MAACO paint job might be worth it.

rust? out here?

if you don't care, just sand it down a bit and whip out the Krylon! otherwise take the hood and lid off and go down to guadalupe or mesa and have one of the muchachos do it for a meager sum...

Hey Frank, I know a few guys that do inexpensive paint (if you don't really care about having the best quality). Also, aluminum doesn't rust like steel (iron)... when it "rusts" it forms a hard crystal protective enamel (sapphire) - that coating is transparent, very thin, extremely strong, and it serves to protect the metal from further rust or scratches. There aren't very many elements that will break it down save mercury (Hg)... last time I checked it doesn't rain mercury in AZ  .

Thanks Erin, I will discuss with you Saturday, over sushi. I'm hungry already.
I'm really hungry right now! BTW, I didn't realize that the pictures weren't for your NSX... I'll give you the info for a good inexpensive painter  .

LOL

There's no way I'd go cheap on my NSX. She gets nothing but the best!!!

I was looking at the pictures you posted of the oxidation and I thought, "I just saw Frank's NSX, it looked so nice  ." I was also wondering why you were only considering repainting the NSX. Then it struck me that those pictures weren't of your NSX... how could I have been so blasphemous in my thoughts!

Agreed!!! Even if it does rust, it's not like it's going to have a hole anytime soon. Let it rust or rattle can the thing. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than a cheapo Maaco job that's going to peel off in a year or two.

LOL, my NSX is red also, like yours, and your avatar.

I can understand why you thought it was the NSX, since it was so dirty the last you saw it. I had it detailed for NSXPO, and she's a lot cleaner now.

See ya Saturday!!
