Is it possible to do this yourself at home without taking the whole shebang to a tire shop? Just let the air out and pry them off? Or is it necessary to get a special machine. How much do shops usually charge for the service?

You have to use tire machine. The lower the rofile of the tires the harder it is. For instance, I can take 70 profile tires using regular tools (no tire machine needed), but 50 or less will require tire machine.

If you never mount dismount tire yourself, I would strongly recommend people experienced to do this.

It's very easy to scratch/damage the rims if you don't know what you're doing. Take it to a competent shop to do.

Fees normally range from $10 to $20 per tire for dismounting, remounting, and balancing. If you're ONLY dismounting, I don't know how much a shop would charge. If you're already going there for your service work, they might even do it for free.
