Redline MTL vs Honda MTL

Hey all, just wanted to share an experience with Redline MTL.

I just dumped some Redline MTL into my Acura Legend I got as a commute car. When I drained the tranny fluid I noticed that it was extreemly clean... so I rechecked the service records and I missed the fact that the fluid had been replaced 7,000 miles ago (doh!)

No big, so I put in Redline's MTL and the tranny feels MUCH improved. Shifts are easier, both up and down, the car goes into 1st much easier but reverse is the same.

Just wanted to share as I would say that 99% of people change their tranny fluid when it needs replacing.(Duh) As a result, improvements in shift feel could be attributed to using new fluid rather than actual improvements resulting from a superior product. This was not the case in this situation since I was too stupid to check the records more closely :-)

Though not *directly* NSX related,...how different can synchros and gears be from a Legend and an NSX?

I was actually thinking of my fluid to redline synthetic, but was debating whether it would make a difference. Your post has given me some direction as to whether I should do it or not. I guess it will never hurt changing it to synthetic. By the way, did u flush the tranny before changing it to the redline? Is it recommended to flush the tranny first?

For the manual tranny I do not think that a flush is necessary as there is no torque converter to hold any fluid.

I am sure that it will not hurt to do it as it may remove some gunk and some extra particles from your tranny case but I think the gains are minimal if any. The two times I have changed my NSX tranny fluid the fluid has come out looking pretty good so I did not feel the need to flush.

Hope this helps.

With different flushes, I've used Redline MTL, synthetic 10W30 motor oil, and Honda manual transmission fluid. I haven't noticed any difference among any of them. I've gone back to the Honda stuff.

That surprises me considering you are in Chicago. Do you drive it in cold weather? With Honda stuff mine is very stiff until warmed up.

Just to add a little humor.... I'm glad we're talking about cars

I switched from Honda MTL, to 10W-30 to Redline MTL. Huge difference in shifting smoothness. I think this is due to the fact that my Synchro's are probably worn. In a car with good (Non-worn) Synchro's you may not notice a difference.

Well, here's the thing.. Some NSX'ers have tried Redline MTL and found that it improved shifting for them. And, some NSX'ers (including myself) have tried it and actually found things got worse compared to Honda MTF (in my case, significantly worse!).

So, if there's that kind of difference from NSX to NSX.. The difference between Legend and NSX must be even greater
