I am in area north of Toronto and just bought a 95 with 53K km and original timing belt. Am worried about driving it without changing the belt ASAP.

Any advice from others the Acura advice on "replace at 7yrs age" thing in spite of not having the 144K kms on it?

If I go for the change - can do it myself OK....but would still like recommendations from other Club members re their "best" garage for big jobs like this one.

thanks in advance.....Irving.

Yep - change it up with the water pump too.

If you're a member of the NSX Club of Canada, you'd get a deal at Erin Mills Acura (good tech there - Allen).

Thats the one spot I would recommend, but I think that youre right to do the belt.

i took my 92 for t-belt and water pump change at Gilman Auto, around scarborough town center, Raymond has done lots on NSX there, and i am putting in new clutch there too, let me know if u need their phone number

How much would it cost to change the timing belt and water pump at a dealer?

Ray

I'm not sure, but if you're a memeber of the NSX Club you save 25% on parts and 15% on labour at Erin Mills - and the work is done by a guy we trust!

Does anyone know if Erin Mills will give me the 25% off on the parts if I decide to do the job myself?

I have the tools and know what I am doing - I never hassle a dealer for my mistakes, and always check all the parts for correct numbers etc.....I have the full manuals set.

What do you think their reaction would be?

NEW Question - I was going to make a copy of the NSX engine deck area padded paint cover (using wet suit material). Does anyone in the club own one that they would let me take a pattern off of? It would not leave your sight - I would just trace around it with paper and pencil.

I'm sure you can buy a timing belt anywhere BUT that's not the story!

If you search the site, you'll find a few well qualified technical guys who DIY'd and their cars DIEd!

Its a more complicated procedure than you'd expect for a dozen reasons, and if you're a currious gearhead, maybe the trick is to go in a "help" someone who is a master at it.

Since its nearly impossible to find a new motor and even parts are hard to come by, the money you may think you're saving (and $10k more) may be going to SOS for their 3.8 L upgrade since your motor will be "done".

Just my $0.02

Two possible sources:
1) Ask Garrick (Lithiumus) to see what he's got, if he doesn't have, he'll want a copy too!
2) Ask Mikey (MikeyNSX) if he can introduce you to Albert at Speedstar, he has a full set (I'm told) and with Mikey's help you can make copies for you and Garrick, (and maybe a spare for the Club so others can borrow them if they like)

Theres a good chance that Ive got what youre after sitting in a box in my coldroom.

I dont know exactly what your looking for, but whatever it is, Ive *probably* pulled it off my car already. :)

I DO HAVE THE NSX SERVICE COVER ALSO.

Thanks for all the info and suggestions. This is a pretty active site on a long weekend

I will follow-up with those 2 members re taking a pattern off their "NSX Fender Cover" (that is what the manual calls it - in the Special Tools section of the Engine Removal section - part number 07MAZ-SL0000A, $450 dealer list).....and if I get a pattern from some one, and there are some other members who want one too, then I can order a bigger sheet of wet suit material and cut a few at the same time. I will go ahead and get pricing on the raw material and come back here later to take "orders".

I think some of you mis-understood my question about Erin Mills being willing to give me the 25% discount on Parts only - with me in DIY mode. I was wondering if they only did that for work done in their shop. I don't have any worries re messing up the job. I did my Vigor belt 2 yrs ago, have rebuilt transaxles, done valve and bearing jobs, full body restorations with MIG welding, and gutted new car interiors right down to the metal for stereo/alarm work. I have an engine hoise and hydraulic car lift in my garage, plus all the air tools. I work slowly and carefully. I don't think the belt replacement (including the pump and gaskets etc) should be a big problem. Main reason I would take it to a good mechanic is time - DIY will kill 2 weekends when I could be driving it.

cheers......Irving.

Cool! Sounds like it could become a club event, watching helping with your tech projects, just start a thread inviting people and you'll see what happens!

This should help. It's a list of dealership costs around GTA and Ontario. I had mine done last year so it should be close. Membership in the NSX Club of Canada will save you some $ to, it will likely pay for the membership right off the bat!

Irving, I had mine replaced about 2-3 years ago (on a 91 with about 70k km's at the time), so it was well past the 7 year recommendation. I periodically checked the belt for cracks etc and it looked to be in great shape so I didn't fret about it too much. A search on the forums will probably reveal if anyone has had their belts snap due to age. Regardless, for your own peace of mind, it's a good thing to get done.

I was in exactly the same boat as Arshad last year when I was 'thinking' about it. Then within a month I read 2 posts about failed timing belts and when I learned the cost of them, I booked my car in for the full jam service right away.

I have an NSX Service Mat...Maybe we can work something out...like getting one of your "knock off" for the NSX Club of Canada.

Yes, As a member of the NSX Club of Canada you will get the discount off parts alone.
