Hi Guys,

I bought a set of 97+ brakes and rebuild kits. I have already stripped, sealed and rebuilt the fronts prior to install. I was about ready to start the rears, and was reading the service manual. There are quite a fw special tools mentioned, spring compressor among others. It has me a little worried, as I do not have these tools.

Has anyone done the rears? How big a PITA are the rears VS the fronts with just 'average joe' tools?

The emergency brake mechanism is an auto adjusting gizmo and this is what the spring compressor is for. You can consider leaving that part alone, and just replace the seal and the boot. That is how I approached it with Peter Mills' car when he had a boot melt down after a season or two of "hot shoeing" at the track:).

I stopped at Page 19-21, step 8 in the on line manual, and reassembled from there. Only needed the tool to turn the piston, which you can either use a very large screwdriver, or you can buy this little universal piston retraction tool at AutoZone for about $8.

HTH,

Thanks a bunch Larry, that was just the reality check I was hoping for! If I can ever pay you back for being my online NSX tutor, please let me know.

I've rebuit my calipers a couple of times now. The rear caliper tool (the one that screws the rear piston back into the caliper) will make life easier for you, but just get one of those Paul Bunyon standard screwdrivers and you'll be fine.

I've got the caliper tool if you'd like to borrow it.

Thanks for the offer, but I got them done tonight! Going to install new calipers, rotors, splash guards and spare tomorrow :D

Very nice rebuilt calipers. Please photo pictures after it is install on your car. I am interested to see how it would look like with white NSX.

Will do, hopefully it will look a little different than it does in the pics. I scrubbed down to bare metal and then put a thin coat of 1200deg(F) flat black paint on there. In the photos it still looks a little glossier than in person.

Its was a little too dark when I took the photo, so see my gallery if you want the Value Size image. Hope this gives you what you are looking for:

Thanks for the picture. Your NSX look almost exactly like mine except the rims. I can see the front caliper but not the rear. It is good enough, i am going to paint mine to gunmetal this weekend but it won't be as good as your since i will not be able to take it apart.
