Rear Bose Speaker?

Folks-

Please excuse my lack of knowledge on this one: I have seen a "rear" Bose speaker mentioned on this forum often. I have a '95 and HAVE noted the speaker between the seats, but thought that it was only for the integrated phone that I also have on my car. Is this the "rear" speaker everyone is talking about? If so, I don't think that any tunes are coming out of it. Is there any way I can check, as I don't think that the stereo has a "fader" option.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, that's the one you've heard discussed. It's not a "rear" setup, but rather a "center channel" setup, meaning it's fed with program / signal derived from both the left and right channels; like the subwoofer whos amplifier it shares, only with different equalization for mid-range rather than low frequencies. It improves the "sound stage" characteristics of the system. It can be a little difficult to tell if it's working, which is normal given its function.

Sitting in the driver's seat, try adjusting the balance to full left channel. At that point, any mid-range you hear coming from your right is coming from that center-channel speaker. If all you can hear is full-range coming from the driver's door, and low freqs. coming from the sub, then it may not be working. As long as you have full-range coming from both doors, it makes it difficult to hear the center-channel distinctly. Maxing out the treble, and thus minimizing the bass, when you do this may also help by reducing the non-directional low freqs coming from the sub.

You SHOULDN'T be terribly aware of whether or not this speaker is working under normal conditions, which has led some to believe it's not doing anything important. That is not the case.

I didn't just run out and check this, but this is how I recall verifying the operation of mine in the past.
