If it's for your personal, private use, then one of the better "FRS" radios is a good choice. I use them. They're UHF and work well within their range limits, are small and easy to buy and use, and don't require a license. Because they're limited to a max output of a half-watt, the range is somewhat limited to around a mile under good conditions. If you need more range, then go with "GMRS" radios. Also UHF, they're commonly available in two-watt versions like most of our "club radios", and will have approx. twice the range (or a little better) of the FRS radios. They're a little larger, cost more, and DO require that you get a license, which is not difficult.

The commercial radios/frequencies the club uses cannot be used by individuals for personal/private use, nor can they be licensed for such.
