Last Thursday I was able to entertain a business associate by going to Spring Mountain race track in Pahrump, NV for a Radical two day school. Who says work can’t be fun! The first day included threshold braking exercises, toe-heel exercises on the track, skid-pad work on oversteer and understeer, and three shadow lapping sessions where the students follow the instructors. Day two started with the students riding with an instructor in order to get a better idea of shift points, and what an ideal lap looked and felt like. After that it was all solo track time with no shadow car. Sessions lasted about 30 minutes, followed by a 30 minutes classroom session. This school provided plenty of track time, and was an absolute blast. If you want experience something different than your NSX on a track, I highly recommend this.

The Radical SR3’s feel like they are on rails. Braking and cornering are very impressive. The acceleration was okay, but didn’t really impress me. I think I expected a bit more in that category. It’s about on par with a Z06 in acceleration. The seats are adjustable, and will accommodate pretty tall drivers.

Completion of the two-day school allows you to return for their arrive and drive sessions, which I will certainly do. You can even split the fee of an arrive and drive with another driver, making it pretty darn affordable at $600 each. Considering everything is taken care of, not a bad deal IMO.

Guy on the left spun 6 times. Twice off the track. One of those times it cost him $500 for a new starter.

C5 owner. All we heard for two days was how great Vettes were. He actually told us he thought Z06's were faster around the track, right up to the point where we started to get our laps timed.

Great pics Gene. My envy goes without question and saying. ;) Do you think the lack of acceleration feel was b/c of the higher cornering speeds?

I think it was a combo of three factors:
1) The higher cornering speeds.
2) Watching some of the videos on the internet showing them blowing by a Viper or what not.
3) I drove my car the night before the school.

1) I think so too.
2) Oh no, my videos got out again.
3) Oh shut up.

;)

A recent Autoweek editorial also detailed how the author drove a dedicated race car (a SCCA Lola 2000?) just before driving an Enzo. To no surprise, the Enzo subsequently felt like a Mercedes, as compared to the sharp dynamics of the race car. Street cars require just too much of a compromise, when compared to any sort of race car. Heck, my kart gives me thrills my NSX never will — like having both chocolate AND vanilla

What was the name of the track?

Those pics are great.

KGP, I take it this means you got your car back? If so, congrats! How does it feel? I NEED to drive my car soon:). Sorry for the hijack.

Hey, Mo - The truck picks it up for shipping Thursday. I just had to run by and drive it while I was in town. The stupid broken SPA gauge still isn't back, but I just told Mike to send it back and I'll deal with the gauge later. It feels strong. Broke loose in 3rd. Last dyno Mikey cranked up the boost a bit and it came in at 574, but the bad news is the CM stage 4 slipped a bit. Looks like 550 might be the max for that clutch, at least as it goes for my car.

I know you're itching. It will be fun when yours is ready, I'm sure.

Sounds like it is time to get that Tilton clutch :)

Yep, that's what all they good for, track day. As they are not competitive in any racing so far.

Yeah, I saw bunch of 1 season Radicals for sale on the west coast. Found out that the Radicals weren't competitive and a group of guys were going to go buy a Stohr instead. http://www.stohr.com/

Those cars and very tempting. Unfortunately, all i would be doing is compensating for my lack of skill  Its pretty disheartening to see Vaughn take your car and take 3+ secs off your lap time. :frown:

There was a Stohr in the garage area. Sweet looking car. Basicly the same engine as the SR3, but 300 lbs lighter. I bet that thing would be a riot to drive. What ever happened to the track day car they were supposed to come out with?

Ahh, its all fun, so who cares ... unless your name is Allan.

"Starter" - the electrical/mechanical device, or the human being who works the pit-out lane? :D
Mr. Wolf was not required.

There are two radicals running against us in the One Lap of America April 31-May 7th.

Should be interesting to see if they hold together for 4,000 miles of street and track events...

I'm not sure how they get them registered as street legal cars to comply with One Lap rules but who cares...we aren't running NSX's that I would want to run past California safety and emmissions test as well.
