Radiator hose question

On the upper radiator hose there is a white colored dot at one end of the hose( and a yelow colored dot about halfway up the hose--). Q--should the end with the white dot be attached to the radiator or to the aluminum pipe? It looks as though this hose could fit either way.

line up the hose. usually you'll find out real quick which way is which.

the way the factory hose fits is that there are no kinks in the line. it should be smooth through out.

regards

Rob

Did you figure it out? I just did this. My 17 1/2 year old hoses still had the dots on them plus, I was careful to mark the old hose and install the new hoses the same way. I think the dot is on the radiator side, but would have to look at my car. Here is a pic. It really only fits properly the one way.

Tools required for changing any/all coolant hoses...

You may not need all of this stuff for each hose, but I think this set will do them all.

I know on the engine bay hoses the dot goes to the engine side, so I am suspecting the dot goes towards the radiator side, but to be sure, when that upper hose is in place it should not interfere with anything(like the bracket for the ABS pump;)).

If you look carefuly at Bill's pic, the longer end is away from the dot, so I do think the dot is on the radiator side.

BTW: If you think the little oil cooler hose is tough, be thankful you do not have a 1997+. The lower radiator hose will surely ruin your day:). The pre-1997 with the 16" spare is not too bad,

To back up Larry's comment on dots on the engine hoses, this pic shows the dots and the arrows on the old hoses point forward, so dots toward engine. Can't see the dot on the middle hose. It is yellow, if I recall and must be on the backside in the pic. Finally getting to use some of my pics

Thanks, guys. I had figured it out. Actually, I had the hose on backwards and it didn't seem to fit quite right. It's corrected.

Now...drumroll please.....I'm very proud to say that just completed changing out all of my hoses today! What a job! Thank you for all of your help--your on-going advice made the job much more doable.

congrats on the hoses.

its a big job regardless but a total pain if you dont have a lift.

now you can drive your nsx for another 100K miles with out worries!

I know it's about time for my car to get a hose replacement soon, but what are some of the early warning signs of bad hoes ready to squirt open an burst? Besides the obvious crack in hoses. You guys got me worried now.

Mine simply burst. And it was long way from home. Mine is a '91 and the hose failed in 2006. Not bad for a 15 year old hose... But I was lucky to catch it, I saw it blow coolant through my mesh engine hatch, and pulled over before it could overheat.

But IMO you should be worried. Go ahead and replace them all, about 22 hoses IIRC.

How many hours did it take you to do it? Do you have a lift? I'm thinking of doing mine this summer.....

Speaking just for me: 8-10 hours, take your time, some are a PITA, jack stands.

I just did my 2 main hoses due to a recent burst in one of them. I managed to do both main (engine compartment) hoses and replaced my coolant tank with a dali aftermarket tank... all in about 1-2 hours using basic tools, vice grip, flat head screw driver, razor, monkey wrench and a 10mm socket/rachet.

The hardest part was trying to get the brackets off because they were in a tight spot and on a bad angle.

i burst my 2 main hoses (the ones connected to the radiator) last month.. i have an Auto NSX and it happened when i was driving up hilly road.. that time, i was using only 1st gear and 2nd gear only..

do u think driving a lot in 6k-7k rpm made the hoses to burst??

btw, i didnt change the hoses since 1991.. maybe it was the time to change the hoses..

No, of course you have to drive the car that a hose CAN burst, obviously but it will happen anytime anywhere with 17 years old hoses. The age is the problem.

Yes, this is the main reason. The hoses will get soft with age and one day they will burst. Any car with 17 year old hoses is sure to have a failure. I have seen them fail much earlier then that as well.

Just an FYI, cars with headers can have the failures sooner, since there is more temperature change in the engine bay. Especially for the oil cooler hoses (small, cheap, but difficult to get to:))

Yes, this is the main reason. *The hoses will get soft* with age and one day they will burst.

In addition to getting soft their textile weave inside of each hose gets weaker over time, esp. of those which get hot (big ones at the engine). Those people who changed the engine hoses themself maybe know the cracking noise of the hoses while dismounting them.

For anybody out there with 15+ years old hoses: you're playing Russian roulette. :D

I always thought that the hoses would get hard when it's cold. I guess its the other way around? Right now while the car is cold, my main hoses are semi soft. Time to change?

Sorry, don't confuse the word "hoses" with "hoes"
