Question regarding NSXr shift boot

I have the NSXr shift boot and the SOS rapid shift knob (round one)
How in the hell do you get the boot onto the knob without snagging the fabric???

The lower edge of the shift knob is fairly sharp and snags the fabric of the shift boot when I try to clip it on.

Theres got to be a trick to it.

I removed the upper plastic piece from the original boot and put it on the mesh boot. It snaps in just like before.

I dont have that trim piece!!!

Sigh something else to buy.
