Hey guys with BBK, I'm curious as to how often you replace your rotors. What type of BBK you have, how many miles/track events you put in before replacing would be nice info to have. Thanks!

Ak

I have the Stoptech BBK and only have done four events with them. The rotors still look like new and my track Hawk pads got through all of them.

Depends ,if the rotors don't warp first then it depends on pad choice.Use agressive pads on the street and they will wear faster.I have had rotors crack as well but usually near the end of thier life,so to answer your ? My best logevity so far has been one season of 20 track days with a smorgisbord of different pads.

Interesting. How often did you use to replace your rotors when you had stock brakes?

Anyone else to add to the list?

My assessment has been that most people who run on stock brakes are not pushing their car or are not advanced drivers. As John noted, the pads are a major variable in here.

My cryo treated 97+ OEM rotors lasted 6 track sessions with Panther Plus pads; they started to crack with serious hair lines. My DaliRacing two piece floating race rotors for 97+ are on their 11th track session with the same Panther Plus pads though I had to turn the rotors at about 10 track sessions. And these are not BBK.

I know that one tracker running on big Brembos changes rotors every 2-3 track events. But he has 430+ rwhp to stop! YMMV

edit: typos

I have warped new rotors due to technical facters related to pad drag as well as suboptimal bed-in or switching pads with different compounds at the track.

I am running Wilwood BBK on all 4 wheels, 6 pot front, 4 pot rear. I have warped rotors in one day(Wilwood race rotors), or I have gotten up to 8 days(Brembo Champ car rotors) out of them. I run XP-8 pads for the initial bite which may be adding to the rate of rotor degradation. I get about 600 miles of track driving out of front pads, I have double that on the rears and they have 70% left. I do not get any measurable rotor wear, the rotors usually fail from heat cracks. I am currently running Brembo Champ car rotors with custom hats, 328x28 all the way around. I am very happy with the feel of these and I do beat on this setup, often getting 200 miles in on a track day, running the car at 9/10 on a regular basis with RA-1 tires, CTSC high boost setup.

The big down side is wheel fitment, if I was to do this over, I would stay stock diameter, run VERY agressive pads, duct like crazy to pull heat out of the system and blow through the cheap rotors, pads and Motol 600 fluid, running stock wheels and comparatively inexpensive track slicks.

I have stock size Stoptech rotors lasted me 10 months street driving with 6 track days. From novice to intermediate driving groups with stock suspension and street tires. A lot of heat stress hair lined crack but I don't see any problem of braking... Only that the Motul600 is a little milk chocolate brown at the first couple pumps when I bled them out after track day (with couple air pocket).

This year I had the Aero-rotor just for track use, RA1 and Tein RA. Brakes feel a little firmer but as I'm carrying more speed into corners (running advance group this year), the brakes set up didn't feel much better than the old set up.
However, clearly the brakes run way cooler, and at the end of track days, I had never seen any air trapped and the fluid is still light yellow. (I in fact only used 1 bottle of fluid for the whole season.) After 7 track days. The aero-rotor shows a little stress, when compare to my old stock size rotors. It was much better condition than the old ones at its third track day. I also had the Dali air deflector, but I beleieved he mentioned that without taking off the heat sheild, it doesn't do any good. It's double sized the stock one so I suspect it must have some use...

Slacker

I say until you ar REALLY good, do as Dave suggested at the end. Run oem or Stoptech 2 piece oem sized rotors, try some good pads (ex- Hawk HP+) use Motul 600 fluid (make sure they are bled correctly (don't forget ABS fluid cyl) and get some MONSTER ducting to the center of the rotors backside.

I bought one of the first Porsche BBK back in 1999 and have run a minimum of 10 track events per year. I replaced the front rotors once (that was at the beginning of this year) and resurfaced the first set of rotors once. Also, a set of stock Porsche pads usually last one season. BTW, my replacement cost for the rotors was $177 each plus freight. Compared to using 2-3 sets of stock rotors on my 95 per season and replacing pads every two to three events, I consider this purchase a bargain. Plus you never have to worry about your brakes. When I bought my Zanardi late in 99, it was a no brainer to transfer this kit over. One thing to note, if you don't run "R" compound tires, don't waste money on BBK. You need the grip to take advantage of the braking ability.
