Question about upgrading to newer OEM exhaust

Hi,

I am going to be upgrading my 94 factory exhaust to a 98 factory exhaust within the next few weeks.

Sorry if this is a stupid question (I'm not technically inclined), but will the retrofitting of the 98 exhaust to a 94 require any additional changes/steps, or is it a simple swapping install?

Thanks in advance! -Thomas

I don't know about the install part, but if you have an automatic transmission, the new exhaust may change your shift points.

Actually, my NSX is a manual transmission. Thanks for the reply, though.

Does anyone have any insight on factory-to-factory exhaust upgrading (from 94 to 98)?

The 1997+ exhausts are different than earlier exhaust's length of tubing between the cat and muffler. Honda produced two versions between these years. The first version is a similar to the 1995-1996 exhaust, except it has adaptor pipes that increase the length of the piping between the muffler and cat. You can unbolt these and use the exhaust on your car. I believe later on, they then made the piping one piece, and you can not use it with your NSX.

Cheers,
-- Chris

Hi again,

It turns out that the '98 exhaust WAS the version that had to be cut (modified) in order for it to fit in my '94.

The install went well, however, it sounds a little less aggressive compared to the older exhaust. Am I just hearing things? Is there a difference in sound between the two?
I'm not sure, but I think that he cut the resonators off the '98 and left the existing resonator on (to make it fit), or something like that.
Maybe I'm just hearing things.

I don't think its a straightforward install, as the newer exhaust is designed for a C32 motor. You MIGHT want to buy the exhaust that comes for the autobox NSX -- that MIGHT work better.

Am curious as to why you're doing this:
- not sure that you save any weight, or gain additional power
- its not for "better sound"
- if its "looks", then you can mount different tips onto your existing exhaust
(note: if you have the earlier Battlestar Galactica tips, you MAY be able to unscrew these and put the new 02 tips in their place.)

The newer 1997+ exhausts have a helmholtz resonator on each inlet tube before the exhaust canister...and this takes a lot of "ping" out of the exhaust note.

However...the newer exhaust is exactly that...newer...perhaps has seen a lot less use than your OEM 1994...and as exhausts are used more, they get louder/throatier, generally speaking, up to a certain point.

Hi,
I always preferred the '97+ style exhaust tips, and recently, I found a pretty good deal on the '98 exhaust, so I decided to grab it while I could (I was planning on just getting new tips, but the exhaust was fairly inexpensive ~$150 and had only 8K miles).
Just my luck, though.... a couple of weeks later, Science of Speed had a 2000 OEM exhaust for the SAME price PLUS free shipping! Not only that, the '00 exhaust that he had was the type that did not need to be cut to fit into my '94! Grrrrrrr!
Whoever got that exhaust really got a great deal!

Yes, and I can vouch for that ......

and if you add a Cantrell Concept AIS, the latter will sing a nice tune closer to your ear than the exhaust note - unless you are out to impress the crowd instead .......

I have access to a 1998 OEM NSX exhaust with about 10k miles on it. Send me an e-mail at [email protected] and I'll contact the owner (local buddy of mine who just installed an RM Racing exhaust) and see if he wants to sell it.

If you're still interested in a different exhaust I have an HKS exhaust on my '94 NSX. It has approx 30k miles of use and it sounds just a tad bit louder than stock.

E-mail me if you are interested I may be considering selling it.
